HUAC wanted to know if movies were promoting communist beliefs in an attempt to destroy America from within.…
Another “weapon” used to fight the Cold War was political alliances. The U.S. was allied with France and the U.K. In order to keep these countries from falling to communism, the U.S. lent them money for rebuilding their economy (Doc. A). In addition, the U.S. also made alliances with Norway, Denmark, the Netherlands, Belgium, the Republic of Germany, Italy, Spain, Turkey, and Greece. These democracies formed a treaty called NATO (North Atlantic Treaty Organisation) (Doc. D). The U.S. helped several European democracies, especially the U.K. and France, to rebuild their countries after WWⅡ. The democratic alliance, NATO, agreed that if one of them was under attack, then the other countries would help them. But unfortunately, the Soviet Union…
The transition of Hollywood movies from their birth to date has been tremendous, not only from black and white to color, from physical film stock to digital format, from the silent era to the use of 3D surround sound systems but even the portrayal of emotions has been altered to satisfy the demands of the present generation. The curiosity of film makers has now been diverted to fulfill the demands of the current audience rather than to express their own imagination. The best technique to ‘measure’ the impact of social variables on movies would be to compare a classic version of a movie to its modern remake. In my essay I will contrast the 60’s version of the movie the Manchurian Candidate to its’04 version. The alterations of the latter version…
Liberal, urbane, and left-leaning, many of them members of the original Group Theatre with Immigrant and often Eastern European Jewish roots (like McCarthy himself), the entertainment industry on both coasts provided some of the prime material HUAC needed to present its case before a provincial, puritantiantical and conservative America. Several members of the Group Theatre had indeed been members of the communist party in the 1930`s and all identified with the fight against poverty, inequality and fascism. McCarthy knew how well with the Cold War his truth could be manipulated” (Brater).…
Accusations of these people being involved with the Communist party rendered them unable to produce any work. These people were named the Hollywood Ten. The Hollywood Blacklist was responsible for putting up to 150 people out of a job because of accusations involving Communism. This greatly censored what could have been a time of great new ideals and viewpoints on society in films during the 1960s. Screenwriters were not allowed to portray anything slightly Communistic for fear of being fired.…
Decades ago, in the later part of the 1940’s and 1950’s, Americans were very fearful about the ideas of communism spreading to the United States. Considering this, they launched a system allowing them to investigate alleged disloyalty; they called this the House Un-American Activities Committee (HUAC). Their initial plan was to step up its efforts to expose and eliminate communist in the American society. In addition to focusing on labor unions, government officials, and militaries’, the HUAC turned its attention to Hollywood in 1947. More than 40 workers in the film industry received subpoenas ordered for them to help uncover communist, but 10 of those people refused to testify in court, giving them the famous nickname of: The Hollywood Ten.…
During my research I read many articles about the Red Scare and the Hollywood Ten. When learning about the Hollywood ten I also found out about the Committee for the First Amendment. Within finding out more about this committee I came across this article that told the story of the Hollywood Ten and the involvement of Lauren Bacall, Humphrey Bogart and other A-list actors of the time.…
Introduced in 1938, the House Committee on Un-American Activities (HUAC) was created to investigate alleged disloyal and incendiary activities on behalf of citizens, employees and any organizations that were politically tied to Communism. Nine years later, in 1947, the HUAC Committee Chairman J. Parnell Thomas strongly suggested that individuals in the entertainment industry to answer questions about their own colleagues’ past and present communist affiliations. In the editorial Photoplay, Hollywood Ten, by John Simkin, listed that Hollywood Ten refused to answer questions as they based their refusal not on the Fifth Amendment’s guarantee against self-incrimination but on the First Amendment’s protection of freedom of speech and association.…
When the Cold war began producers were not allowed to film certain items, however, by the 1950s it was safer to produce films without any political or economic implications at all. “Although Broken Arrow (1950) had presented Cochise sympathetically as a peace-loving Apache, Monogram Studios abandoned its plans for a movie on Hiawatha, whose efforts to achieve peace among the Iroquois nations might be interpreted as a boost to Communist peace propaganda (Document 1, pg. 229).” During the time of the Cold War, the media’s communication evolved from broadcasting over the radio to print in newspapers and then into…
Republican Senator Joseph McCarthy from Wisconsin became increasingly popular during this time of hysteria as he was the chairman of this committee. McCarthy used aggressive tactics and unsubstantiated charges against individuals, even pinning a father against his own son. Joseph McCarthy and the HUAC did not care whether or not their actions were ruining people’s careers and lives. The HUAC first targeted the film industry in 1947, as they believed that communist propaganda was being spread through US films. In response to the HUAC accusations, Hollywood executives created a “blacklist” of people who they thought had Communist backgrounds.…
Between the early 1940s and the late 1950s, the United States of America was threatened by the rapid growth of communism in the USSR. Many Americans came to believe that Communist supporters had infiltrated the American borders and were beginning to take over. Among those believers was the Senator of Wisconsin, Joseph McCarthy. McCarthy gave a speech on communism in front of the Republican women’s group on February 7, 1950, in Wheeling, West Virginia. In this speech, McCarthy addressed that he had a government document listing over two hundred communists who were currently serving in the U.S. Government and military. This serious accusation thus launched the Red Scare in the United States. Arthur Miller alludes to this historical event in his…
The Cold War was by chance the most stressful part of the World’s history than anything else because it stretched across the entire globe and affected every country in one way or another. There are several reasons that the Cold War began and several different points that can be described as the beginning of the Cold War. By far the most influential part of the Cold War was the distrust that Joseph Stalin had between Winston Churchill and Harry Truman. The hostile relationship between the countries began when the Soviet Union would not open invade the Eastern part of Europe pushing Germany back and helping out the rest of the allies (Crash Course #39). The Cold War was a time that no one wanted to blink because they were afraid they might miss something important.…
4. In the scene at the luncheonette, the actual writers all admit to being current Communists. Why is this scene in the movie? Why might this be a different attitude then most of the people brought before HUAC might have had?…
The 1950’s was a time marked by fear, paranoia, and persecution, where even Hollywood was under scrutiny. Those involved in Hollywood whether it be directing or acting found themselves being censored and limited due to the political events taking place around the world. Within the accounts of Mark Goodson and Arthur Miller, they cite the ways in which the anti-communist movement affected television programming and motion pictures during the 1950’s. To start, Mark Goodson recalls his experiences as a television producer during the Red Scare. He said his first experience when dealing with the movement was at the start of his television show, What’s My Line?, when a member on his panel was listed in the Red Channels.…
The Decade of Fear was essentially caused by one man – Joseph McCarthy. When he served on the Senate from 1947-1957, he seemed to make it his personal mission to eradicate all traces of communism from the earth (or at least America). Right away, he went after Hollywood, black-listing anyone involved in the entertainment industry whom he thought might be linked with communists. The following year, he released a list to the public with the names of 154 organizations he believed to have communist affiliations. This initially gained him support from the citizens, as 110 of those organizations did have some form of link to communism.…
