The events that led up to this moment was nothing short of eventful. Dean O’Banion and Bugs Moran were the leaders of the North side and wanted Capone dead. On January 12, 1925 an assassination attempt was made on Capone by the North Siders. It was a drive by shooting, but Capone had seen so many that he recognized it and was able to escape with his life. On January …show more content…
On that fateful Valentines day, four of Capone's men shot down seven of Bugs gang. The plan was brilliant, Jack “Machine Gun” McGurn located Bugs headquarters behind the offices of S.M.C Cartage Company at 2122 North Clark Street(Rosenberg, 2015). McGurn hired gunmen who were not from Capone's gang and outside of Chicago so they could not be recognized. The most essential part of this plan was the clever ruse, two stolen police officer uniforms and a stolen police car. To get Bugs into the garage was easy. A local booze dealer contacted Bugs on February 13 and told him that he had high quality liquor for a decent price. Bugs hastily accepted the offer. Now that everything was set in place, it was time to strike. Around 10:30 A.M Capone's gunman were in place and were looking for Bugs. When they thought they saw a man that looked like Bugs, they sprung into action. The four gunmen searched the garage in the police car and found seven of Bug’s gang. On May 18, 1929 Al Capone was put in jail for the first time ever. He had been carrying a concealed deadly weapon without a permit. His sentence ended on March 17, 1930 but this was just the beginning of his end. On October 18, 1931 Capone was convicted of federal tax evasion. This was because all of his illegal income had to be claimed on his taxes, which he did not do. He pled guilty to the tax evasion charges. On November 24, he was sentenced to eleven years in federal prison, was fined $50,000 and had to pay $7,692 in court costs, in addition to the $215,000 plus interest in taxes that he owed to the government. On August 11, 1934 Capone is rumored to be one of the first prisoners to arrive at Alcatraz Prison. This is where he will remain for five more years until he went on parole. When he returned home on November 16, 1939 Capone was in very bad health. He was no longer able to run the gang, had lost weight, and his mental health had deteriorated because of his neurosyphilis (Al Capone, n.d). On January 25, 1947 Al Capone died from cardiac arrest. Not many people were at his funeral, it was a cold day and just his family and some of his closest friends attended
