for a deeper understanding of the terms we learned in the course.
The film was able to show all the different techniques the penguins used to adapt to the weather changes, for example they used the group as a source of heat, The nesting grounds they went to had ice walls which was used to help protect from the strong winds, and thicker ice that didn’t melt until the summer which helped protect their young.
We witnessed the aging process from the prenatal stage to the postnatal stage and the struggles they faced through out the adult stage. Since the mothers couldn’t produce milk or Lactate for their young, this made the survival rate even lower; Both mothers and fathers would take turns going into the sea eating enough to feed not only themselves but their young as well. According to the field work done by Roger Kirkwood and Graham Robertson "The penguins foraged on 93.2% of their days at sea and rested for the remainder. On each foraging day, penguins usually entered the water just after dawn and averaged 4.71 h in the water before exiting at dusk." Showing all the efforts penguins put in for survival of themselves and their
young.
Penguins are Bipedal but may seem quadrupedal with Locomotor patterns that include walking, crawling and swimming, these different methods of transportation made their walk to the sea and back to the nesting grounds much easier being able to transition from walking to crawling allowing their feet to rest for a little bit. Penguins use vocalization to communicate with one another as well as forms of display such as raising their arms up in the air. Penguins have an advanced circulatory system to help prevent them from hypothermia. In order for the penguins body to conserve heat, blood flowing to the flippers and legs transfers its heat to the blood returning to the heart, this countercurrent heat exchange helps ensure that heat remains in the body. However if the body ever becomes too warm, blood vessels in the skin dilate, bringing heat from within the body to the surface, where it is then dissipated. There are about 17 - 20 different species of penguins, and these penguins are carnivores.
