An executive decision has been made to relocate the clinical pathology laboratory of the XYZ Laboratory Service to a new hospital site which is currently under development of the ABC Hospital Group to be located in Kuilsriver. Accordingly, this narrative serves to give our design features and the specifications required such that a draft floor plan can be delivered to us within 6 weeks. The design of this facility must comply with government health and safety regulations, WHO guidelines as well as with HPCSA requirements in terms of spatial planning and spatial relationships. The design of the laboratory must take into account both the size and activities to be performed within the various areas together with the various relationships between areas. Reception area (A) – approximately 5m x 4m with two receptionists and seating for 10 visitors. A reception desk of 2m x 0,9m x 0,75m high must be served with two telephone lines, two dedicated computer plugs, two network points and two general purpose plugs. The room must be served with an additional two plug points accessible by other staff. Hospital sample delivery will be via an airlock pass-through hatch (PTH) directly into the “Specimen Reception, Sorting & Preparation” area of the laboratory.
