As the story progresses Ann reaches a point where neither Steven nor John has showed up and it was becoming night time. Ann decided that she needs to go to the stable and feed all the animals. Prior to leaving she puts on John’s clothes to protect herself from the cold and wind. John’s jacket be a symbol of strengths and toughness along with warmth almost like a shield from the cold, and what is interesting is that Ann subconsciously uses John’s jacket. Ironically, she uses it to protect herself from the storm that symbolizes her inner conflict between choosing to pursue her personal desires and choosing to conform to what is moral. This is significant because it shows that Ann is very reliant on John and whether she knows it or not she needs him for his protection and she comes to see this at the end where she says that she found the years that she spent with him of “worth and dignity” (p.11) Steven came shortly after Ann came back into her house from her failed attempt at feeding the animals in the stable, upon him entering she lit up a lamp, the lamp can be seen as symbol of light and the absence of light represents evil and temptation. The lamp demonstrates the down fall of Ann and her relationship with John as the lamp begins to fade out from flickering to burning out Ann is being pulled in by temptation and evil as a result end up sleeping with Steven. After this moment the fire which was initially a source of comfort to her becomes a source of discomfort she describes this by saying “The whips of light still flicked and coiled - suddenly there were the swift little snakes that this afternoon she had watched twist and shiver across the snow” (p.10) This demonstrates her feeling of guilt and the snakes represent the devil which has caused her
