What Is The Connection Between 211 And The Cognitive Dissonance Theory
I will demonstrate a connection between The Big Bang Theory episode 211 and the Cognitive Dissonance theory. Cognitive Dissonance theory is described as a discomfort experienced by an individual whose contradiction beliefs and actions at the same time that constantly contradict, or is confronted by new information that conflicts with existing beliefs, a topic we have covered in class this quarter. How do we connect the two? Well, let us recap what Cognitive Dissonance theory is but in a new light. Basically, the theory is one or more contradictories that cause an increase in dissonance between individuals’ beliefs and actions that have the individuals change their beliefs, actions, or action perception to lower the dissonance. As he read, he gasped and sat on his chair then read out loud, “To Sheldon live long and prosper Leonard Nimoy” who so happened to been eating where Penny worked (Prady, et al. 2008). Penny explained how she asked Nimoy to sign the napkin for Sheldon. To add to the dissonance, Penny informed Sheldon that Nimoy had also cleaned his mouth with the napkin as well which caused Sheldon to jump in disbelief that not only does he have a signature but also Nimoy’s DNA. To Sheldon this is the greatest treasure, and for Sheldon to lower his dissonance he left and returned with all of the gifts he had planned choose from to make an even value gift exchange with Penny. Then realizing it all was not enough Sheldon gave Penny a hug. Sheldon seemed to struggle as he gave Penny an unbelievable action of the
