The Fine Line Between Child Abuse and Discipline There is a fine line between discipline and child abuse. Many people disagree on what is and is not abuse. There are many factors that can affect how a person views corporal punishment and abuse. Some of these factors are personal beliefs, pressure from outside sources, and the severity of the “discipline” that has occurred. This is why there are so many different kinds of neglect: physical, mental, medical, and educational. An example of physical neglect would be a parent starving their child(ren). Mental neglect could include not showing the love and care the child needs. Medical neglect would be when a parent(s) does not take a child to the doctor when needed or to the dentist for tooth care. Educational neglect happens when parents do not make sure their child(ren) attend school regularly. In all actuality, teachers could be responsible for educational neglect as well, if they are not taking the time to help all of their students. With this many different forms of abuse, it could be far too easy to cross over from discipline to abuse. Everyone has a different opinion on abuse. Some of those opinions have been based on personal experiences, and some on education. It is plain to see that some forms of abuse are obvious and some are not, but if you feel as though someone is being abused, you should report it just to be safe. This will ensure that a proper investigation can take place. Let someone else make the decision for you. All abuse, or signs of abuse, should be taken seriously. References
