As a 21st century young women “A Rose for Emily” and “the Yellow Wallpaper” raised to me women position during times where women were portrayed in a weak, dependent and submissive picture. Therefore, we can clearly see the historical and gender criticism in both stories. For example; in “The Yellow wallpaper” which was written in 19th century, at time when women in society were “second-class”. The author, Gilman, in fact wrote this story to shake this idea of women. Thus the story demonstrates the gender division which had an outcome of keeping women in a state of ignorance.
“I sometimes fancy that in my condition, if I had less opposition and more society and stimulus—but John says the very worst thing I can do is to think about my condition, and I confess it always makes me feel bad.” (345). This quote is seen at the begging of the story, where the narrator reveals her desire to have the freedom of thinking independently but this opposes her submission to her husband. Therefore this somehow shows us the hidden criticism of nineteenth century women who would prefer to stay ignorant on their place in society rather than taking action. Likewise, Emily isolation her father made her do, which indicated her submission character. “A Rose for Emily” and “the Yellow Wallpaper” displays to us the situation of two women who are experiencing the same emotional situations. Yet again both also express the emotional and physical trails the character has to endure on an everyday basis. In “the yellow wall paper” we see a woman who si oppressed is suffering from depression and loneliness. On the the other hand “A Rose for Emily" shows us the struggle of a young women in maintaining a "life" while being all alone depressed, overwhelmingly influenced by her father, and she begins to worsen mentally after his death. “Emily” gets judged by the town’s people, especially after the death of her father where she staid alone without getting marries and obviously lived alone too The two stories show us how the main character deals with uncontrollable changes and the struggle of acceptance while facing those
