Sanford Meisner was born August 31, 1905 and was raised in Brooklyn, New York. In 1923 Meisner graduated from, what is now known today as Juilliard School he then attended The Damrosch Institute of Music. Meisner’s definition of acting is “the ability to live truthfully under the given imaginary circumstances.” Meisner was upset with method acting due to the recklessness of it, he found that it lead to emotional distress.
Meisner created what is now known as “The Meisner Technique” when he was working with Stella Adler and Lee Strasberg. The technique is designed to “Get the actor out of their head.” there are many different steps and exercises that fall into play when we talk about the Meisner technique but one of his most famous ones is the repetition exercise. Meisner was a founding member of the Group Theatre which existed from 1931 to 1940.

Adler was an independent artist, Stella Adler was born on February 10, 1901, in New York. Stella’s method heavily relies on imagination and thinking. Adler enjoyed when actors could bring their own sense of flare to their work. She believed that when independent actors thought for themselves, they gain the ability to share their ideas that they create.
Adler’s definition of acting was that it relied on doing, not feeling; she stated that feeling is a bi-product of doing. Adler chose to use imagination to evoke emotion and circumstance into the real world of a not so real play. She believed also that an actor must observe the world that they exist in, and take in every single detail.
