The Religious Freedom Restoration Act was the law in question. It determines whether or not a government policy places an undue burden on a religious group. If a policy does place an undue burden, the next step is to find a solution or an alternative.
In the lower courts, the Little Sisters of the Poor lost their case, but the case eventually made its way all the way to the Supreme Court. The Supreme Court vacated the lower court ruling.
