Perhaps the largest way The Power of One was changed was though the addition of the character Maria. In the book, the reader does not ever meet a love interest of Peekay’s and is left to wonder if he will ever find love. Peekay instead finds comfort in friends and teachers, such as Morrie and Doc, as opposed to the crush introduced in the book. This also caused an a major scene to be added to the movie, Maria’s death. In the movie, Maria’s death is a domino causing many of the racial disputes to be laid to rest. The absence of it takes a large portion of the reason behind Peekay’s drive and determination to achieve this goal out of the story. Hoppie Groenewald was also described in the book as Peekay’s first friend. Without this heartwarming addition to the story, a large hunk of the story was missing.
