The Fourth of July

When school was over for the year, Grace Toone looked forward to the July 4th celebration. Her mother, Clara Jones Toone would make new dresses for her girls. She was good at sewing and took great pride in having her girls look nice. On the morning of the 4th there would be a patriotic program at the church. In the afternoon, the town would gather to the square and run races, or ride bronco horses. Grace’s favorite was the ice cream. The 4th of July was the only time of year you could buy it.

When many people think of the Revolutionary War, they might imagine George Washington gallantly leading his men through the winters at Valley Forge or the like. Berkin begins her masterpiece by giving a general overview of the roll that women played in our countries war for independence. Now I, like many others come to think of the iconic role model women like Betsy Ross and the fabled Molly Pitcher, but this star of a book opened my eyes to the everyday revolutionary woman. The running theme throughout the book is the fact that women during the revolutionary war were notable participants on many levels deemed beyond worthy of admiration. This theme was not touted, but elegantly weaved throughout the text in stories of women that left a permanent mark on war effort regardless of race or creed.…

    In the 1930’s race and gender create strong divisions within society. The Deep South of Alabama is a hard place for most blacks to live due to the white’s refusal to give up their belief of supremacy. This sense of racism is so extreme and vulgar that the Whites will do anything to stay separated from the blacks of the community. Not only is this sense of racism strong in this community of Maycomb but gender distinctions are as well. Women are expected to hold a certain spot in the social scene but are never seen equal to men. Between men and women the distinctions were not a radical as the distinctions between whites and blacks but they are still very visible. Our grandmother was very excited about seeing us as we were visiting her after such a long time. Our grandmother lived with one of our uncles and one aunt. The house was kind of crowded due to her having not enough room for everybody but she was excited about our stay and would always say “I love to have my grandchildren around”.
