As a society in the United States continues to become more diverse and rely more on technology, advances in policing techniques and strategies must change and become more advanced as well. As a result, more people are using electronic devices to access social networking sites, to date, their bank accounts, their email, to shop, etc. While these people are using these sites, criminals are taking advantage of this vast amount of information people are putting on the social networking websites. Which is why law enforcement must alter their policing strategies and techniques and use the same source (social networking) to capture these criminals. This change would alter the way some police departments gather intelligence, find evidence, and capture criminals. In fact, many police officers who already use this technology claim that social networking sites have helped them solve crimes faster, as well as helping obtain search warrants (Smith, 2012).
