According to Merriam Webster dictionary A Hippie is, a usually young person who rejects the mores of established society and advocates a nonviolent ethic. So the long haired unconventionally dressed young person in broad terms. The term Hippie came from the word Hipster first used by Harry Gibson and the word hip used by the Beats in the 1950’s.
Hippies originated in San Francisco, California and East Village of New York City in the late 50’s early 60’s. During the 1950’s and early 1960’s a lot of controversy was happening including the Civil Rights Movement, Disease Outbreaks, the Hydrogen Bomb and more aided in the origin of Hippies. They were the group of people that came in influencing peace among the people. So what affect did Hippies have on the United States Socially?
The Hippies were Anti- Vietnam War. They believed that America had no business in that war, and that was the spark of the beginning of the Hippie Movement. They peacefully and nonviolently protested against the Vietnam War. In fact one of their well-known sayings was “Make Love, Not War.” Most hippies were white and from the middle class. They influenced others in society to speak up for what they wanted. They changed the way of life and made many things tolerable. They changed music and literature. Everything was more in style and upbeat. Their belief in freedom helped people come out of the closet on sexuality, fashion, and hairstyles. People actually started to say what they wanted to and do what they wanted to. Before the Hippy movement people were very conservative and now people are more open. People nowadays say that the Hippies gave birth to the Yuppies, Young Urban Professionals, in the 80’s and 90’s. After the Hippy Movement the society was never the same.
