The framing device is put inside stories in a different context. Framing devices has something to do with the outer story characters. The audience is the inner story. An example of an outer story character is the author or performer in the inner story. The framing device technique is to seek attention of the narrator that you can’t depend on. Framing devices are used in narratives to add more to the story. Chaucer was born in 1343 in London England. The poet died October 25, 1400. He was the first poet to be buried in Poets Corner of Westminster of Abbey. The poets corner is a place that poets are recognize of their work they had did for the British culture. The main reason why Chaucer was buried in the Poets Corner because he was a worker at the place. Chaucer was well known has the famous Father of English poetry. He occupied a unique position in the middle ages. Geoffrey Chaucer had a lot of different tittles. The Canterbury Tales was the best known work that he wrote during his time of living. He had nine other major works. The school Chaucer attended was St. Paul Cathedral School. At the school is where he was influenced to write. In the year of 1359 Chaucer joined the English army. During this time period Chaucer was a very smart talented young man. Chaucer went to jail and he was charged with rape. Chaucer traveled many places. After the death of his wife he wrote tales so he wouldn’t think about her death.
The general prologue sets up the frame work and introduce each pilgrim in the story tales. The bigger story is outlined in the general prologue, or the introduction of the poem. In the beginning of the general prologue Chaucer introduces himself, the pilgrims on the journey and the host. The narrator speaks in the first person to explain each one of the pilgrims on the trip as they appeared to him. All the stories are told in third person. When the stories are told in third person it provides the reader with thoughts of the characters in the story. A Group of individuals are planning a tour to travel to a holy significance. The pilgrims called the tour a pilgrimage. In the prologue the narrator speaks in first person. The stories are told in third person point of view. Since the stories are being told in third person it informs the person who are reading the stories the thoughts of the characters. In this particular story in the general prologue takes place in spring. A literary device that was used in the general prologue was personification.
The Canterbury Tales story is not the average poem. The trip that the pilgrims took was not the average road trip either. The trip is filled with a lot of alcohol and plenty of random stops before thy got to their destination The Canterbury Tales were very different from other works in this time period. A lot of different things happen throughout the story. The story was published between the years of 1387-1400. The story is written in past tense. In the Canterbury Tales the total number of stories that are being told is 24 stories. He had planned to write over a 100 different stories to tell. Chaucer never planned to make any of his stories that he told to better than the others. The stories were written in Middle English. The Middle English language was created after the Norman invasion. Chaucer decided to write the stories in this language because people would be able to understand the stories. The story used English as a native language. Majority of others poets mainly did their writing in Latin or French .The trip began in the month of April. The exact trip date was April 11; 1387.A pilgrim group is traveling to a place called the shrine of Saint Thomas Beckett located in Canterbury. Another name the Saint Thomas Beckett was Archbishop. On the journey there we total of 29 pilgrims. The journey total is about 60 miles traveling distance from where the group is meeting up at. The groups of young peers are running away from the Black Death. The effects of the black of death the labor will have a shortage and the feudal system will fail. The feudal system is in when workers gained land from the king. In the story there are a lot of different characters that narrates and tell their own personally stories. The primary narrator of the story is unknown member in the pilgrimage. The other pilgrims narrate majority of the other tales in the story. Some pilgrims didn’t tell their stories. Chaucer brought people together when he used the framing device. A list of people he brought together in the story was knight, the monk, scholarly clerk, pardoner the wife of bed and many other characters.

The pilgrims would make time go by while they are traveling by telling stories to each other’s. To tell two stories was the challenge of the pilgrims. The planned was that the people was to tell two story tales on the way to Canterbury and when they will leave to tell two story tales on the way back. The Host came up with the idea of the people to tell the two stories. A reward would be given to the pilgrim who had the best story. The reward will be giving at dinner. The stories the pilgrims told to each other had lessons the people could learn from the stories they were listening to. The three main lessons that the people learned were human struggles, morality and humorous fare. A lot of the stories that were told during the trip were directed to some of the people that were on the trip. The story tales had a lot of profanity and sexual content in the
stories.
During the story there were struggles between the tales the characters told. A lot of clashes between the sexes their host had occurred when they were on the way to Canterbury. As the pilgrim traveled to Canterbury they had encounters with other pilgrims they decided to travel with the group on their journey. After majority of the stories had been told the pastor had preach a long sermon to the story tellers. The characters represented different social levels. The stories that were told are covered in different genres from medieval literature. The stories reflect on the characters that tell the story tales. The main characters in The Canterbury Tales are The Knight, The Wife of Bath, and The Pardoner. The Knight was the definition of a perfect guy. The Knight had been in plenty battles. He was a pretty brave guy in the story tales. The wife of bath she was described as huge woman in the story. The wife of bath was somewhat death. She always wore big hats. She had been married about five times. The only reason the wife of bath would attend these journey’s was hope to find a new man. She was very easy going. The wife of bed had attended about 3 pilgrims to Jerusalem with dreams to find her a new man. The pardon made a lot of money when he sold his fake relics. The young man had the skills to sing and preach to people. His is voiced was very high pitched with long hair.
In conclusion Geoffrey Chaucer used the different framing techniques to put together one big story by using smaller stories that were told.
