“At night nothing happens” (Wolff 2). The Olympic Village policeman who said this had no idea that it would be at night that the most deadly Olympic tragedy in history would happen. He didn’t know that one night in 1972, a group of Palestinians would attack Israeli athletes in the Olympic Village. Unfortunately, the overly relaxed attitude of Olympic security at the Munich Games opened the door for corruption and disaster. The murder of eleven Israeli athletes by a group of Palestinians called Black September during the Olympics in Munich was a gruesome and horrid act that still has ramifications today. First, in the wee hours of the morning of September fifth, Black September hopped the fence with a group of clueless American athletes. Next, they broke into the bottom floor of an Israeli apartment, where a short battle ensued with a few Israeli coaches. Black September quickly got the situation under control and moved their hostages into an upstairs room (Wolff 6). Then, as one hostage escaped through the parking garage, two other hostages were killed while trying to seize a couple of the terrorists’ guns. The terrorists sent out their message that they wanted their prisoners released, or they would begin killing off the hostages. The Israeli government was unwilling to cooperate with Black September’s demands, but the Germans didn’t let the terrorists know that (7). Germans offered the terrorists money, then some Germans even offered themselves as hostages instead of the Israelis, but Black September rejected both offers.
