guy because no one has a normal conversation anymore. “Nobody listens anymore. I can't talk to the walls because they're yelling at me, I can't talk to my wife; she listens to the walls. I just want someone to hear what I have to say. And maybe if I talk long enough it'll make sense. And I want you to teach me to understand what I read.” ( Ray Bradbury, Fahrenheit 451). In today's society people do not usually smash windows for fun or run over animals. It is possible that if these things were not illegal we might actually do these things for entertainment. I believe that the seashells and parlor families are very similar to us today. We watch television and listen to things on earbuds which are very similar to parlor families and seashells in this story. So even though the society in this story may seem brutal and boring do not forget that we are in some ways very similar. Another obvious aspect of the world of Fahrenheit 451 is that they have lots of problems with their society. For example the entertainment is destructive, they enjoy smashing things and watching people die on their parlor walls. Guy Montag knowing this says he is being “punctured for the benefit of how many civilian parlor sitters”(Bradbury 128). The people in this civilization are also disturbingly familiar with overdosing on drugs as one medical worker talks about overdosing on sleeping pills “We get these cases nine or ten a night”(Bradbury 13). The most obvious problem is that of burning down whole houses because there is a book in the house. This aspect I am sorry to say is probably more similar to us than it is different. Today we have problems with excessive drug use all over the place. The most popular movies and TV shows are about people dying. Our world today although does have some problems has not yet gotten to the point of burning houses for having a non threatening object in possession. Although Fahrenheit 451 may seem like a cruel and dangerous world where people entertain themselves evilly and overdose daily we must remember the things that we have in common with them. Consider the fact that we are more similar than you think and that our world could soon become dystopia if things don't work out.
