To each and every individual Australian, the date 26th of January can mean different things. For many, it is a celebration of the landing of the First Fleet at Sydney Cove in 1788. To others, the 26th of January can be known as ‘Survival Day’, ‘Day of Mourning’ or ‘Invasion Day’ as it marks the date that the British settlers landed on the Australian shores and made the lives of all the Indigenous people who already live there hard and depressing. The Aboriginal people believed that there was injustice in this as they were technically celebrating the day they took over the Aboriginal Australian's land and this lead to many things as the killing of many Aboriginal people who were innocent. They also took many children away from their families as they believed that they community taught the children 'wrong'. The Australian Aboriginal people and the Aboriginal Progressive Associated then put up a poster calling for support to publicise the poor treatment of the Indigenous Australians. They wanted to catch Aboriginal people’s attention to bring the equality to the people. This poster then lead to a lot of significance to the Aboriginal people as after this gathering, it lead to major reforms of the Protection Boards, which would grant full rights to Aborigines. You can see this in Source 2.C and they even added 'ABORIGINAL AND PERSONS OF ABORIGINAL BLOOD ONLY ARE INVITED TO ATTEND'. Just from this message you can tell they restricted any other people and were very serious about this. On the 26th of January, 1938, 100 Aboriginal protestors stood in Australian Hall at 150-152 Elizabeth Street, Sydney in protest against the celebration of Australia's 'founding'. Aboriginal Australians, young and old were holding posters and signs around the streets of Sydney and you can see this in Source 2.D.
