Being a Navajo Code Talker took much training. Philip Johnston was the man who enlisted the Navajos into this training because he had grown up on a Navajo reservation and had become accustomed to their culture and language. The main goal for the Navajo Code Talkers was to be able to send messages and receive them fast without being deciphered by enemies. Johnston had seen what the Navajo Indians were capable of from their work in WWI and how fast they could transmit messages and how useful they were as allies. When trying to convince the generals of the Marines that the Navajo should be used for their skill, his argument was their work in the first War. He also knew that the Navajo had one of the biggest population of all of the Native American tribes and that they would be the biggest group to pull large amounts of Code Talkers from. Because the Navajo had been separated from the rest of the population of America, mostly the whites, it was safe to say that their language was not known by many outside of their tribe. After their seven week training course for the marines, they had to go through an eight week messaging course in order to learn all that was needed for code talking. Some of the men enlisted were not as qualified as they needed to minimize the amount of people in training in order to focus on individuals more. Instead of training 50 men each month, recruitment went down to 25 men per month to train. Many volunteered to be code talkers, some even lying about their ages in order to be able to help. Others were drafted when necessary. Old men years above the maximum age would lie in order to help. Younger men claimed to be years older while they were only fifteen because they knew that any help, especially from young, active men could be of use. Training included memorization of the code and learning how to work the radios in order to transmit the code between Code Talkers. Their training also consisted of weapon use and other military training because they needed to be prepared to fight if
