Claudius is ambitious man that craves power and unlike other characters of the play he gets and maintains his power in a very immoral way. Claudius, because of his obsession to get the power of his brother, poisons him and this ignites the start of the revenge going to take place by Hamlet, “the serpent that did sting thy father’s life…
1. Is Hamlet surprised when the Ghost asks him to revenge his father's murder? Is he surprised when he learns who the murderer is?…
The fragility of each family is tested when someone closely related to them comes into the picture. Christopher learns from an elderly neighbour, Mrs. Alexander that the reason for the break-up of his parents was caused by another man. Shockingly, the man is Mr. Shears, the ex-husband of Mrs. Shears, who lives across from Christopher. Mrs. Alexander broke the news to him on a walk to the park by telling him, “Your mother, before she died, was very good friends with Mr. Shears. ( . . . ) I mean that they were very good friends. Very, very good friends” (Haddon, 60). This substantiates the point that even marriages that seem to be impeccable, are capable of breaking up. Quickly after the death of her husband, Hamlet’s mother Gertrude from Hamlet remarries Claudius, her brother-in-law. Angered, Hamlet tells Horatio and Marcellus that, “She married; O most wicked speed, to post/ With such dexterity to incestuous sheets!” (Shakespeare, 23). Later Hamlet confronts his mother and asks how she could marry Claudius who is incomparable to King Hamlet. Haddon and Shakespeare show that families can be as easily broken up as they were brought…
Claudius is Hamlet’s Uncle and Stepfather. That is an unusual relationship. Claudius loves Hamlet like his own son but Hamlet does not accept it feeling that his mother married quickly. In I.ii.90-121, CLaudius is giving a speech to Hamlet. He…
His ability to overlook Claudius’s devious smile and snide comments allow Hamlet to understand his ulterior motives of ultimate control and tremendous wealth. Prince Hamlet felt forsaken by both his mother and Claudius when they chose to join in marriage just after the death of his father. Hamlet mourned over the death of his father for quite some time, and Claudius did not complete a single act to console him, but rather debase and disgrace him. Cruel treatment and cold actions from Claudius constituted Hamlet’s assertion regarding his true motivations. When Prince Hamlet discovered this had not been a mistake but rather Claudius’s plan the entire time, sadness turns to rage and his bitter emotions towards Claudius became immensely…
" . . . the young Norwegian Prince, who, like Hamlet, has lost a father and who, unlike Hamlet, has promptly taken positive action to avenge his father's death. But Fortinbras . . . has mastered passion; he will obey his royal uncle, rejecting the idea of revenge, and will expend his energy in an attack upon Poland. Fortinbras . . . is emerging as a foil to Hamlet" (Lowers 38).…
Hamlet was brought up as a prince, a noble born, embedded with sweetness. Showered with love and provided with whatever necessary for a prince… He was out studying and not being involved in politics of Denmark or even being involved with the series of war King Hamlet has being fighting. He embodies a full course of human emotion, ranging from grief, love, anger, rage, and passion to fear and insanity. Ultimately, Hamlet has no interest in becoming the king rather his concern is to avenge his father’s death which he could not fulfill because his character does not show someone who is capable of murder, apart from this, there were various factors that contributed to Hamlet’s delay in seeking revenge against Claudius.…

Claudius kills King Hamlet and sends Hamlet into a dark place inside his mind where an obsession with death and possibly avenging his father's suspicious undoing. After his father's death, Hamlet's mother marries Claudius almost immediately. The inappropriately timed union angers Hamlet and his feeling of betrayal causes him to believe that love and compassion are not an important or real part of any human or relationship. His depressive and morbid outlook assures him that death is the only thing that is certain in the world. In his early soliloquies, Hamlet expresses longing for suicide "O that this too sullied flesh would melt, thaw, and resolve itself into a dew” (I, II, 130) and often thinks about this…
Hamlet was considered to be wallowing in self-pity over everything that had recently transpired. His father’s death, his mother’s marriage to his uncle as well as he had been stripped of his rightful place as King of Denmark. Hamlet was of high morals and religious background. He was raised within the Lutheran Christian Faith and was appalled by everyone’s behavior. Resentment now raised its ugly head towards his mother in her “incestuous” union when Hamlet during his soliloquy, proclaims “Frailty, thy name is Woman!” to reflect his disgust of her weakness. But due to the love for his mother Hamlet keeps his resentment and disappointment to himself at this time. Faced with the realization of the murder of his father, who he had idolized and compared to a Greek sun-god and whose ghost has demanded revenge in order to leave purgatory, Hamlet is further torn between his moral values and his Christian faith, as his faith does not allow murder (“Thou shall not…
Additionally, even when Hamlet has legitimate reason to oppose Claudius, Hamlet does not oppose him. When it is time to seek revenge from Claudius for killing his father, Hamlet has to make sure if he really has to go against Claudius. Hamlet has to put on the play Murder of Gonzago to reenact what King Hamlet’s ghost said in order to make sure there was authenticity in what the ghost said to him. Hamlet needed confirmation to go ahead and even think to revenge the murderer of his father. After the play when Hamlet has the chance to kill Claudius, but yet again he has another pity excuse that Claudius was praying and killing Claudius at that moment would send him to heaven rather than hell even though he was not praying. Not only was Claudius…
Hamlets mother Gertrude betrays her first husband, the first king of Denmark. This betrayal comes in the form of a hasty marriage to the king’s brother Claudius, who we find out later murdered his brother in an attempt to acquire the crown. This is an act of betrayal on Gertrude’s part, because she should be in mourning of the her first husband’s death, but she immediately enters another marriage, with the kings brother. This is a betrayal to Hamlet because his father was killed, and his mother soon marries the man who we find out is responsible for it. We find out that Claudius killed his brother and Hamlets father with poison, we find this out when Hamlet is visited by a ghost in which Horatio cannot identify but shows itself to Hamlet as his father, it is at this time that the ghost tells Hamlet how he really died and who was responsible . When Hamlet learns of this news, he is enraged with the news and he begins looking to get revenge on the murderer Claudius. Hamlet throughout the play begins to doubt his sanity and if he should kill his uncle Claudius or himself “To be or not to be…….” (Hamlet), this is an act of betrayal on Hamlets part.…
Hamlet once saw his mother as the epitome of virtue. This image is dashed against the rocks when he finds her married, incestuously, to his uncle less than two months following his father’s death. Having only seen his mother with his father, Hamlet perceives that he has lost her after she marries Claudius. Hamlet has, “All his life he has believed in her, we may be sure, as such a son would” (Bradley, 98). Hamlet looks down upon his mother’s second marriage as disrespect to the memory of his father. Hamlet cries out “O, most wicked speed to post with such dexterity to incestuous sheets!” (I. 2. 161-62). Now alone save for Horatio, Hamlet’s madness is left to grow unchecked.…
Hamlet's peaceful life was flipped upside down very quickly. His father, King Hamlet, died, and his mother remarried his uncle very shortly after his father's death. Claudius, Hamlet's uncle, took the throne that Hamlet rightfully deserved. While trying to work out this awkward situation, Hamlet is met by the ghost of his father. The ghost explains that he did not die, it was through a "murder most foul," that he was killed by his own brother. Hamlet is left not sure what to believe, only making his anger worse. He is angry at his mother for going through with such a hasty marriage so soon after the king's death. This is evident when he states, "Frailty, thy name is woman," expressing his dissatisfaction with his mother's choices. He is also upset with Claudius as he says, "A little more than kin and less than kind," of their relationship. It is difficult for him since he has no like for Claudius even though they are now even more closely related.…
One of the closest and most impacting relationships that we have is that with our family. There is often no stronger bond than between a parent and a child. At the beginning of Hamlet, however, Shakespeare hits us with a mother and son whose relationship is far from admirable. Hamlet's first line refer to his Uncle and new step-father as "a little more than kin, a little less than kind," showing no respect for his mother's second choice of husband. Referring to his mother when proclaiming "frailty, thy name is…
