What Is The Relationship Between Poe And Mermaids
Have you ever heard of the Butterfly Effect where a butterfly flapping it’s wings can cause a hurricane weeks later? “It is said that something as small as the butterfly’s wings can ultimately cause a typhoon halfway around the world”. The connection that this shows is that, something as delicate as a butterfly’s wings fluttering can cause something so monstrous as a typhoon around the world. In this I'm going to compare Death, Helena Bonham Carter, Japan, Edgar Allan Poe, and mermaids.

Mermaids were half woman, half fish and they thrived when the Earth was nearly covered in 75% of water. Mermaids and Sirens were merpeople who: “Dwelled near rocky cliffs and sung to passing sailors”(Radford, Benjamin). Both had led sailors to their death by using their beautiful voices to direct them towards rocky shoals and wreck their ships upon them(Radford). The first mermaid was a woman named Era, she lived in the rocky shoals near Holland where she ended up hurt and a couple of humans were said to have healed her back to health in a lake near the shore. Triton, however was the first merman he was said to have a long white beard with a green scaly tail. He was called Triton because he carried a triton with him at all times, he was the messenger of the sea. Some of them were said to: “Befriend, and even marry humans”(Radford, Benjamin). There were only three sirens in existence who were the handmaidens of Persephone. Persephone was raped and abducted which is how the sirens came to be, they were made into bird women to search for Persephone. Shortly after that, they went to the rocky cliffs and led sailors to their deaths, but then came along the Argonauts who had gotten help from Orpheus to pass unharmed(“Seirenes”). Helena was born May 26, 1966 in Golders Green, London, England. Helena’s parents are Elena Bonham Carter, a psychiatrist and Raymond Bonham Carter, a merchant banker. She is the youngest of three Bonham Carter children(“Helena Bonham Carter”). Helena went to South Hampstead and West Minister school for middle and high school. Shortly after she pursued a career as an actress. Helena has royalty in her family: “Through her father she is the great-granddaughter of Prime Minister Herbet H. Asquith”(“Helena Bonham Carter”). She is several movies such as Corpse Bride, Sweeney Todd, Charlie and the Chocolate factory, and the Harry Potter franchise. She was: “Often referred to as “the corset queen” or “English Rose” because of her earlier work”(“Helena Bonham Carter”). She married Tim Burton in 2011, and had Billy Ray in 2003, and Nell in 2007. After being married for fifteen years they split up in September of 2016. Helena has been nominated for many oscars and a fun fact is that in all of Tim Burton’s movies she works alongside her co worker, Johnny Depp(“Helena Bonham Carter”).
