The relationship between soft and hard universalism is that both have a set of universal morals that applies to every individual. However, for soft universalism, it is the universal morals that can be applied to all individuals, even if we think that someone is morally wrong and we must find the common grounds to understand their actions. An example for soft universalism can be a life of a big family of 10 children where the parents have to give away or abandon 4 children as the parents are unable to afford to feed all the 10 children but only 6. Thus, giving away or abandoning 6 of the children would give the remaining children in the family the best possible way for survival. On the other hand, hard universalism is said as that morality is absolute. There is only one “universal moral code” which is the ultimate code that all must abide and abiding this code is not a matter of logic or ethics, but a matter of Dogma. An example of hard universalism can be taken from the Exodus (22:19 NAB), “Whoever sacrifices to any god except the Lord alone, shall be doomed to die.”
In my opinion, I feel that soft universalism applies to our current social environment. This is because we are currently living in a society with many different religions, cultures and differences. Thus, there is an importance to apply soft universalism in our current society to understand the differences and concepts, in order to avoid possible misunderstandings, conflicts and chaos. An example, for a soft universalism can be taken from the recent killings of Charlie Hebdo tragedy when the terrorist acted after their faith and religion was insulted in public by the press. The terrorist have their reason to act as such and the press may also have their own reason to
