What Is The Relationship Between The Great Gatsby And Marxism
The film portrays different literary lenses but this essay will be based on how it demonstrates marxist theory. Marxist Theory is based theories of Karl Marx. These theories are based on class differences and economic (Brizee). Marxism is all about power: rich versus poor. In his theory, every story tells something about the world and about what the author thinks about the world. Marxism is all about the context. Marx says that literature is directly connected to real life and marxism tries to explain what the book/film has to do with the real life (Shmoop Editorial Team). Tom is very rich. He is an example Old money because his family has been wealthy for generations and didn’t have to work for the money. On the other hand, Jay Gatsby wasn’t always wealthy all his life, he was dirt poor. He worked for the money and became wealthy. This is an example of New money. Gatsby was part of the working class before and ended up in the upper class. Looking through the marxist lens, Marx said there are always conflict between the bourgeoisie and the proletariat and no one should ever climb the social ladder because it reinforces unfair economic divide between them (crossref-it.info). Gatsby was very poor. He did not accept his family because they were unwealthy. Luhrmann described him as “Son of God” meaning Gatsby knew he was in the world for so much more such having ambition to become rich (Sparknotes). He was in love with a girl, who is part of the upper class, Daisy and he had to go war. Sadly, she had to leave him behind and marry Tom Buchanan, who promised her a wealthy lifestyle and had approval from her parents. Gatsby didn’t have support of her parents because of he is not in upper class. He wrote a letter to her on the day of her wedding to Tom and he wrote, he would work hard and make money so they can live happily but it was too late, she married Tom instead.
