In the Scarlet Letter, Hester Prynne are led out from the town prison with her daughter Pearl, in her arms and the letter “A” upon her breast. Hester was once married before she had pearl. So in having pearl, she was an adulteress and she had to be punished for it. So the letter “A” was casted onto her for her life long punishment. Hester and her husband, Roger Chillingworth were coming to Boston but he had never arrived. Hester never knew if her husband was lived or not so she went on with life. She was banished from the town and was sent to live outside of the town’s perimeter and forced to live and provide for herself and pearl. She had never …show more content…
told the truth or the identity of her lover.
In Addition Society in the 1850s, women were like housewifes, they did not have any major responsibility like men did. The expectations of a women were higher than they are today because no men expected that women could not do something equal just like a man. Their actions were seen if guilty and then they were punished. I believe that hester should have been punished a little less because if it were a men, he probably would be arrested for a day. It is amazing how today men and women are treated equal but still are not payed equal. The average full time female worker in 2015 earns make seventy nine cents per dollar, which is a gap of twenty one percent.
The society of the book Scarlet Letter judged Hester because she had an affair. But it really was not an affair because she did not know whether her husband was alive or not. She was judged because of the little mistake she made, resulting in have pearl. For example, when hester would come into town to get supplies, she would get rude comments and unpleasant looks toward her. She was judged by the mistake she made. Society in the town saw her as a burden to their community and did not want to damage the community’s reputation. Hester’s action was nowhere compared to what a serial killer would do in the town. Her punishment did keep her out of society life but it opened new ways of life such as human nature, moral questions. But also it just was not hester in this affair, she could have told the townspeople who was the man in the affair. But she did not. Throughout the book, she was a burden but the women in the town comes to her as maternal leader because they realize it was the father’s sexism that lead to this punishment. She did not deserved that punishment, let alone the ridicule comments.
Pearl was judged by Society in Scarlet Letter. In the beginning of the book, pearl was seen as pure. Thought the book, she is really young and she has questions about her father and the letter around her mother’s neck. She seems very intelligent but The townspeople say that she barely seems human and spread rumors that her father is the devil. Not knowing who is her father. Living life, asking questions about who was. She was also seen as a burden because she was the product of her mother’s affair.
In the book The Narrative of Frederick Douglass. African Americans were seen less than human. Society seen them as stupid, ugly, told that they could not accomplish anything. But Frederick douglass proved them wrong. It all began with a little boy who was born into slavery, learned how to read and write and eventually become one of the smartest African Americans in the 19th century.
Society was already corrupted for African Americans during the 19th century because of slavery.
African Americans were degraded to animals. They were treated like animals and talked to animals. they had no rights, no citizenship, no feeling of belonging, being a person. They took away the ability to think for themselves, but the slaves realized that we do not deserve to be treated like this. Slavery began because European inhabitants saw a race that they thought would be easy to conquer and make them do what they wouldnt. The idea of slavery was to have power over one race, europeans being superior and Africans being inferior. Society saw Frederick Douglass as another African boy who will never accomplish anything in life. He learned to read and write from one of his masters. It expanded his mind and the ability to understand topics, ideas. Also the ability to write about his own life experiences. He also was an activist for African American rights, but also a firm believer in equality for females, black or white, native americans or recent
immigrant.
Frederick Douglass is one of the stepping stones for African Americans today. Society has seen African Americans
For the differences in skin color, physical appearances (nose, hair, body shape) and judged them for their differences. Society has called what the African American community see as beauty, they see it as ugly. Also society has used blackface to portray African Americans and our way of life. but today, African American women are the highest college enrollment of all races. Society has called us stupid but look what we can accomplish. An NY teen named Harold Erek applied to 13 colleges, then find out he was accepted to all 8 ivy league schools. Society has builded a stereotype that African Americans only graduate high school and never to go college. We have proven society wrong to all of stereotypical views of African Americans.
In the book The Great Gatsby, the characters have different social status. Myrtle and George WIlson live in the valley of Ashes, which symbolically is where all the less fortunate people lived. The society in the book is the owl eyes on the billboard, it is watching and judging the characters’ behaviors if it was god. The town is gray, dirty and looks like no one has lived there in years. Myrtle married to george, who owns a run-down garage. Myrtle want an enriched life. So she has an affair with Tom Buchanan. Tom Buchanan lives in East Egg, which is old money of fortune; passed down from generations. Tom has an affair with myrtle because his wife, daisy is not easily controlled. Also because myrtle is desperate to have the lavish life and tom wants all power and control of his partner. Also daisy is married to tom but truly loves gatsby. She and gatsby are like forever lovers. They have had affection for each other for years. Their love was kept a secret after daisy married tom. Then their affair was exposed to tom. All of the characters’ actions in are being judged by the owl eyes.
In self reliance by Ralph Waldo Emerson, “The objection to conforming to usages that have become dead to you is, that it scatters your force.” society expects you just to conform to what everyone is doing. If you do not society will end up judging you based on your true personality. The idea of conformity is hide your true self, you let the shell cover while the true identity just dies inside.“Man is his own star” this quote means to be your own person. In society, you don't have to be someone else to fit in. it is just like at night when you see the stars, all the stars are close and some are far away. being far away is being different from the same crowd. but also being different can get you many great places. The essay, it is about finding who you are. if you don't that shows that you are afraid to go in the world and be who you are truly. Conforming will get you nowhere.
in Civil DisObedience, “I find myself disposed to review the acts and position of the general and State governments, and the spirit of the people, to discover a pretext for conformity.” this quote means that in everyday life, someone has to conform at a time in life. When conform when voting. We conform with friends because we probably did not want them to see our true selves. We conform to the laws and acts of the state. But there is a fine line between conforming with state laws and acts and conforming to be higher on the social pyramid. “Why has every man a conscience, then? I think that we should be men first, and subjects afterward”without a conscience what would men be? they would be conform to a group of people without conscience. Society wants to think that we are our true selves but in reality we always conform. I believe that to be subjects and judge, we need to think about the actions committed. how will people be judge when there is not a process. subjects are people with opinions. but to be man, you can judge whether it is good or bad.
Society has always judged the way another person of religion and race does a specific. We have been judged in books and in reality. The harsh treatment should not be given because we are different or we are women. We deserve respect and to be equal to men, in general. In conclusion, American Literature, Society will always judged the characters based on their actions, physical appearances, their beliefs and their social status.
