There were many things going on in the 1960’s. At the end of the fifites, It was thought that this new decade was going to hold a great future. However, it quickly turned into a decade of unrest. The most signficant event was the Vietnam War. It was a very stressful time for America. American’s often used sports for a diversion from the trouble time.
The biggest historical, political and social event of the 1960’s was the United States involvement in the Vietnam War. According to the history.com, The Vietnam War was a long, costly armed conflict that pitted the communist regime of North Vietnam and its southern allies, known as the Viet Cong, against South Vietnam and its principal ally, the United States. This war lasted the entire decade of the 1960’s. This war divided our country and was very unpopular. It ended with the withdrawal of U.S. forces in 1973 and the unification of Vietnam under Communist control two years later. More than 3 million people, including 58,000 Americans, were killed in the conflict. (History.com)

Many people had favorite sports teams in common even if they had different views on the war. Also in the 1960’s, peoples minds were heavy with the stresses of the war and it helped take their minds of their worries even if for just a few hours. Sports were effected directly, because many players had to go to war. But sports also contributed to the impact of the war. According to the Football hall of fame, In 1965, NFL Commissioner Pete Rozelle looking for a way to demonstrate the league's support for America's fighting forces, conceived of the idea of sending NFL players to Vietnam on "goodwill tours." The following year, the NFL became the first sports organization to send a group of players to Vietnam and other parts of the Far East.
