The Archduke himself: nephew of Emperor Franz Josef, was heir to the Austro-Hungarian Empire. Born in Graz, Austria on December 18,1863. Oldest son of Archduke Karl Ludwig( younger brother of Austro-Hungarian Emperor Franz Jospeh)

The Actual Event of the Assassination: Archduke and his wife are shot and killed by a Serbian Nationalist on June 28, 1914 in Sarajevo, Bosnia. The archduke and his wife were visiting Bosnia on political matters. While they were touring Sarajevo, they were in a processional of cars with very little security. They …show more content…
had their top down so the crowd could see them.
At 10:10 AM, when a Serbian Nationalist by the name of Nedjelko Cabrinovic threw a hand grenade at their car. The grenade rolled off the back and went under the car behind them where it proceeded to explode. The explosion wounded an officer and a few bystanders. After they had done all of their political work, they went to the hospital where the officer who was injured by the hand grenade was stationed. On their way to the hospital, their procession took a wrong turn at the corner of Appel quay and Franzjosefstrasse. This is where their killer happened to be at the time. There was no plan that he would turn down that street and he would kill them, it was all by coincidence. The man who killed the Archduke and his wife was a 19-year-old by the name of Gavrilo Princip, he was a cohort of the terrorist group in the land called ‘Black Hand.’ Princip took his chance and walked toward the car and shot into it, he hit Sophia
in the abdomen and the Archduke in the neck. After that he swiveled the gun towards his head, at that point in time, a bystander threw himself onto the assassin. Seconds after there was a mob of people wrestling over Princip, he managed to fight back until the police came and dragged him out of the catfight. As that was happening, the limousine in which the Archduke and his wife sped to the hospital as they both bled out. They both died within the hour.
The Aftermath: Many countries along with Austria-Hungary, blamed the attack and assassination on Serbia and their government and wondered if they would use it as an excuse for some political matters. Russia had Serbia’s back and supported them. Austria-Hungary delayed declaring war until the German leader Kaiser Willhelm promised they would support them incase of a Russian intervention. If that happened, Russia had France as an ally, and possibly Britain as well. Austria-Hungary declared war on Serbia on July 28th, 1914. The peace that had been attained for a great period of time had now fallen to the act of a single person. It consisted of Austria-Hungary and Germany versus Russia, Belgium, France, Great Britain and Serbia. These were the teams of the First World War.
