The Count of Monte Cristo is a very sourceful book with characters creating different and new identities. Fernand changes to Count de Morcerf during the time of Dantes' imprisonment, Mercedes changes to Countess de Morcerf after her marriage to Fernand, Cadderouse changes to M. Pilletin, Benedetto changes to Andrea Cavalcanti to disguise and murders Cadderouse, and last but certaintly not least Edmund Dantes with the various identity changes. Even though these characters names are just being changed or in Dantes' case, changing their names, this still means creating various identities. In every identity change, there is a different name or "alias" as some people call it, and with every name comes a different identity. Dantes had to create a different personality to go with each new character to keep himself disguised. Just like anyone else who may be popular, people feel the need to change their identities for many different reasons, some more commonly used than others. People who change their identities may feel the need to change their identity, because it lets you be someone different, it's unique, it defines who you really are or who you want to be, it allows you to hide or get away from yourself and others, and many other reasons. For these reasons or at least some of them, I feel that Dantes, the main character of this book creates a new identity so many times. The main reason I believe that he changed his identity so many times was to hide himself Edmund Dantes from the people he confronted.…

In the “Masque Of Red Death” by Edgar Allen Poe, Poe uses imagery and symbolism to create an allegory that communicates to the reader the idea that nobody is able to escape death. In the story, Prince Prospero and his royal friends seclude themselves away from a plague called red death that is killing every poor soul it comes in contact with. As the royals entertain themselves with a masquerade, red death himself arrives at the party, finishing up of what's left of human civilization. Now the first thing that is found that creates imagery and symbolism is a line in the story that says,”While the chimes of the clock yet ran, it was observed that the giddiest grew pale”.(Poe pg.5) This shows a symbol of a black grandfather…

The Scarlet Letter contains many reflective and important symbols. The device of symbolism is described in the novel with different meanings. In the beginning of The Scarlet Letter by Nathaniel Hawthorne, he uses a rosebush, a letter A on Hester Prynne’s blossom, and Pearl as examples to symbolism for the Scarlet Letter. As the novel goes on the meaning of the Scarlet Letter A on Hester’s blossom changes from Adultery to Able to Angel. This shows that symbolism can change from one thing to another.…

Have you ever been wrongly accused of something? Perhaps a dear friend blames you for taking a hairbrush that they merely misplaced, or a family member yells at you for letting the house pet out, even though you were in another room completely. Usually we get upset with this person, and should the charge have large enough consequences, we begin to harbor a desire for revenge. This is what became of the lead character in the film The Count of Monte Cristo. The Count of Monte Cristo, released in 2002, was a film adaptation of a novel by the same name, written by author Alexandre Dumas. Within the span of the two hour long film, the audience views the tragic betrayal and false imprisonment of a young French sailor, by the name of Edmond Dantes,…

In the writings of “The Masque of the Red Death,” Edgar Allan Poe uses symbols much to his benefit to include a deeper context to his words, by the symbolism of the seven rooms, the ebony clock, and Prince Prospero himself. Each of the seven rooms, upon further examination of the text, becomes a symbol of the track of life that begins with creation and finishes upon the room of death. Without this symbolism, the track of Prince Prospero following the Red Death becomes an uncomplicated trek through the seven rooms, but with the context of this symbol, it becomes a march through life towards an unwavering death. Within the eerie room of the dark coverings and blood windows, sits an ornament, ebony clock, which holds the symbol of time and life.…

In Romeo and Juliet, the way love is portrayed emphasizes its power and hold over its victims. It shows us how love or even passionate infatuation can cause people to behave erratically and differently to what is expected of them. Also it tells the hard truth that love is not a fairytale, it has its ups and downs, in the scenario of Romeo and Juliet, it is the anger between their families, an external factor, rather than an issue with love or trust etc. Although the most obvious portrayal of love is between the main two protagonists, there are also a few other concepts explored. Mercutio explores the more ‘vulgar’ side of love, with his sexual remarks and jokes, “If love be blind, love cannot hit the mark. Now will he sit under a medlar tree, And wish his mistress were that kind of fruit As maids call medlars, when they laugh alone. Romeo, that she were, O, that she were…

In William Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet the character Mercutio is prosaic about love and considers it as a chase for something sexual rather than it being affection and devotion like Romeo. Mercutio fights Romeo throughout the play on what this affection truly is and shows us the cynical side of love in Romeo and Juliet. Both of these characters show throughout the play that they have completely different views on love.…

I first knew Romeo as a little boy, born into a family in a harsh, long-lasting feud with the Capulet household. Over the years, I served as a mentor to him. He would often come to my cell to confide his problems to me. It was through these talks that I befriended him and instilled upon him the fundamentals of life. I taught him to disregard the conflict between his family and the Capulets, and to always acquire new friends, not enemies. Romeo turned out to be a polite, kind, and caring young man. He was also a very solitary young man; he would rather take walks through the sycamore trees than run around with his friends. One day, Romeo visited me in order to seek my advice. He was lovesick and depressed that Rosaline didn’t return the love he felt for her, and that she decided to become a nun. Sympathetically, I counseled him and advised him, as his friends Mercutio and Benvolio did, to find another woman in Verona. Romeo was still lovesick, but before long, Romeo was back yet again; this time barring good news. Romeo had found a new love, and this time, the feeling of love was mutual. I remember Romeo saying such words as, “Then plainly know my heart’s dear love is set on the fair daughter of rich Capulet: As mine on hers, so hers is set on mine; And all combined, save what thou must combine” (2. 3. 57-60).…

The American Heritage Dictionary defines justice as the upholding of what is just, especially fair treatment and due reward in accordance with honor, standards, or law. Personal or vigilante justice is one person taking the law into his or her hands. He or she would not follow laws or societal justice. In the case of The Count of Monte Cristo by Alexandre Dumas, a man is thrown into prison. He is framed for betraying the government. However, this man is innocent. As soon as he escapes from his 14 years in prison, he gives himself a mission: to exact revenge upon the people who threw him away. Such is the story of a man turning to personal justice. Alexandre Dumas’ novel The Count of Monte Cristo demonstrates why there is a clear line…

Symbols are everywhere, embodying meanings larger than life. One can find symbolism in music, literature, and even in decoration! They play huge roles in specific themes or emotions in certain situations. In “Masque of the Red Death”, by Edgar Allan Poe, death is personified, terror reigns, and tragedy strikes, as he tells a short tale of the infamous “Black Plague” that reigned over Europe in the middle ages, and how death is absolutely inevitable. In the story, Poe used an intense amount of symbolism within the seven colored chambers to establish the mood of the story, the seven stages of life, and to emphasize the terror of the situation.…

Love can be one's’ biggest ally or one's’ greatest weakness. In “Romeo and Juliet” by Shakespeare, love is both an ally and a weakness. The love between Romeo and Juliet weakens them because they cannot be in love, and eventually both commit suicide. Romeo can be seen as a romantic, he falls head over heels for any girl he sets his eyes on, this can be both an ally and a weakness for him. His friend and servant, Mercutio, however is quite the opposite, love is a weakness for him. Mercutio gives Romeo a hard time for falling for Rosaline, and makes fun of him. But, throughout his speech to Romeo he switches from joking around to being very serious. I believe that he has stopped believing in love because of some past experiences, and Romeo’s…
