“There are two kinds of pride, both good and bad. ‘Good Pride’ represents our dignity and self respect. ‘Bad Pride’ is the deadly sin of superiority that reeks of conceit and arrogance.” John C. In other words, what Maxwell is trying to establish through his words is that in each and everyone one of us, when pride is gained some may choose to use it correctly and in a positive way, showing important characteristics one may possess. Pride is a feeling attained in an individual that encapsulates oneself inner thoughts to make them proud of their own achievements. For example, as told in the story by Hurst “It seemed hopeless from the beginning that it’s a miracle I didn’t give up. But all of us have something to be proud of, and Doodle had to become mine” (172). This quote from the story proves the positivity aspect of pride and how pride allows one to achieve through the narrator teaching Doodle to walk (something which Doodle was supposed to never be capable of due to his disabilities), he began to accept and enjoy Doodle for who he was and have pride in his younger brother. Therefore, when an achievement is obtained the feeling of such a feat, especially one as great as teaching a disabled younger brother how to walk, emits pride from oneself. In comparison, pride also has the power to provide motivation in the process of helping others. For instance, as described in the text “Once I had succeeded in teaching Doodle to walk, I began to believe in my own infallibility and I prepared a terrific development program for him, unknown to Mama and Daddy, of course” (173). This quote proves that pride certainly is a positive aspect of one’s mood and capable of pushing one to assist in the lives of others because once the narrator had gained pride from accomplishing to teach Doodle how to walk, the narrator became confident in his abilities and wanted to expose and teach Doodle even more. Therefore, pride provides one with a sense of caring for the needs of others, and inspires one to support and guide one in need. Similarly, pride can even help an individual to accomplish goals they had set for themselves.
