What Is The Theme Of Racism In To Kill A Mockingbird
Racism is when people think that humans can be divided into different racial groups, each with different characteristics. It is a problem that we can see everywhere all around the world in school, in our community, at work and even more. Racism has influenced wars, slavery, the formation of nation and more .This problem is in our live since a long time it's here and it's always gonna be there. Racism is when people are stereotyped or given prejudice based on the color of your skin. But why? the color of the skin is just a color, in the end we are all human beings. in the book to kill a mockingbird the theme of racism is one of the main theme of our story and it showed in many way in the town of maycomb. The town of Maycomb was filled with racism that's why Tom Robinson was accused of rape. people were not fair about his sentence or if he was guilty or innocent. It was pretty clear that Tom didn't do anything to Mayella Ewell. There were things that were said during the trial that prove that he was innocent. For example, the way that Mayella got beaten, it had to be by a left handed man and after that we found out that Tom Robinson couldn't use his left hand because he caught it in a cotton gin when he was a boy which tore all his muscles loose from his bones. We can clearly see it when he tries to take the oath on the bible because he has to lift his left arm with his right one. Also, Atticus makes Bob Ewell write his name to show to the jury that he was left handed. In addition, when Mayella Ewell is testifying, she is always contradicting herself. Like when Atticus asked her if she remembered if Tom Robinson beating her about the face and she always hesitated to answer, as if she doesn't wanna say something wrong. Atticus said “it's an easy question miss Mayella so i'll try again. Do you remember him beating you about the face.”5 then she said “no, I don't recollect if he hit me. I mean yes I do, he hit me”6 . To continue we can see racism when Tom Robinson gets shot and killed after his trial.
