In world war 1, as an eighteen-year old volunteer ambulance driver in Italy, he was wounded in action. In 1922 he settled in Paris, then aswarm with writers; he later recalled that time in A Moveable Feast (1964). The Nobel Prize in Literature came his way in 1954. In 1961, mentally distressed and physically ailing, he shot himself. Hemmingway brought a hard-bitten realism to American Fiction. (Kennedy) The story takes place in a café in Spain. Th characters in the story consist of the young waiter, old waiter, and the old man.
