The Treaty of Versailles was a controversial movement. As described in Hitlers words it is “the great villainy of the century.” (Mein Kampf). In Hitlers eyes the Treaty humiliated and further destroyed the economy in Germany. Germany had to admit complete responsibly for starting the war, also known as Clause 231, “War Guilt Clause.” He did not believe that Germany was at fault for the war, but instead blamed it on other groups such as the Jews and Communists. He wanted to use the Treaty of Versailles to gain power, trust and hope in Germany, in order to restore them to power in the world. Hitler wanted Germany to be great again. Before and during World War I, Germany was well know for there military force. After the treaty forced a major decrease in the number of military personnel, equipment and operation, Hitler stating that “..it had all been in vain. In vain all the sacrifices and privations; in vain the hours in which, with mortal fear clutching at our hearts, we nevertheless did our duty; and in vain the death of two millions who died.” (Source: Mein Kampf). Hitler thought that Germany were at the mercy of other nations, his own sailors sank their fleet rather than hand it over. He planned to make the Slav people Germany’s slaves to increase Germany’s army and navy to number well above those allowed in the treaty. This was a form of defiance against the treaty. Hitler was also outraged by the loss of Germany’s territories, believe that the treaty was a just an attempt to destroy Germany’s economy.
