After reading the story the reader may be curious as to what the characters in the story believed caused Mrs. Mallard’s death. The first thing that is said in the story is that Mrs. Mallard is afflicted with heart trouble, “Knowing that Mrs. Mallard… news of her husband's death.” As the story progresses the reader, along with the characters, thinks that Mrs. Mallard is having a hard time letting the news of her husband soak in. At the end of the story Mrs. Mallard dies when she sees her husband. Trying to put the pieces together the characters in the story assume that Mrs. Mallard was heartbroken when she heard the news about her husband’s death. Mallard died. As mentioned in the previous paragraph Mrs. Mallard seems to be in a happy and joyful mood from hearing the news of her husband. We can come to the conclusion that she doesn’t love him anymore and that she finally feels free. But why did she die when she saw her husband walk in? We can put aside that it was from joy when she saw that he was still alive. I believe that Mrs. Mallard died when she saw her husband walk in was because she was so happy when she heard he was dead. She got all her hopes up and was excited about living for herself. And then when she saw he was alive everything about he being free was crushed. And she knew all these thoughts would lead to guilt if anyone found out what she really thought about her
