There are several types of governments throughout the world. Some have been successful, while others have not. Many of these governments are governed by a dictator, royal monarch, or the wealthiest of the country, with absolutely no or little say from the people of the country. The United States has a government that balances its power amongst three different branches, thus having a form of government that is for the people; the U.S. government is made up of the legislative, judicial, and executive branches.
The United States Congress makes up the legislative branch, which was established in 1787 during the Constitutional Convention. The legislative branch consists of the House of Representatives and the Senate. The Senate has two members from every state, while the House of Representatives is based on state's population. The Judicial Branch is made up of three levels of court, "a state-based federal district court, circuit courts of appeal, and the Supreme Court" (O'Neil), with the Supreme Court being the highest of all three. Today it consists of nine Supreme Court Justices appointed by the President of the United States. One of the most important roles is, "the right of judicial review" (Lansford) which was established in 1803. This allowed the Supreme Court to overturn legislative laws. Although the Judicial Branch has turned down several bills and laws written by Congress, it has ensured freedom and human rights through court hearings that have positively impacted America. One example would be "Brown v. Board of Education (1954), one of the most celebrated cases in Supreme Court history, struck down segregation of public education" (O'Neil). This example shows that the Supreme Court Justices primary responsibilities are to ensure human rights and freedom for the American
