to strike and he was not afraid to use it. If the slave did something the master didn’t like, or sometimes even if the slave didn't do anything wrong, he would be beaten and whipped, maybe his breakfast or supper would be taken away or worse. What could possibly be worse you ask? Well, slaves were punished in many different ways, and with whatever was around, knives, guns, field tools, and of course the whip. Also, slaves could be punished by shackling, hanging, beating, burning, mutilation, branding, and imprisonment. This is no way to be treating a normal human being, they are created from the same Maker as everyone else. Plantations needed help, they were large and needed more than the couple people who lived in the household to tend the fields, so this is why slaves came into work on the plantation. What many people fail to see and understand is why the masters had to be so cruel to their slaves. A contradiction could be that the slave masters had to use some sort of punishment to get the slaves to work. Or that slaves had to learn respect somehow. Slave masters should have been working with their slaves instead of against them or if slaves were treated like people, black or otherwise, not like a horse bought from a rancher for the highest bid, they might have worked more willingly. Also, if the master chops of their hand, or whip them so bad that they can't hardly move, how in the world are they supposed to be expected to work as hard and fast as they did yesterday? Seriously, think about it, they were just normal people, like us being sold and taken from their families to labor in someone else's fields, and that someone doesn't even work alongside them. Slaves had it rough. Thanks to those who made the Emancipation Proclamation, this document saved many people's lives. With all of the beating, whipping, and cruel things that masters did to their slaves, we can see that slavery is just inhumane. Treating people like dirt is very deplorable work.
