What Is Your Cultural Background

My cultural background includes Jamaica. Jamaica is located in the Caribbean and is part of North America. On average, the temperature is between 80 to 90 degrees Fahrenheit. Nights are colder than the days, and the mountain areas are colder than the lower land throughout the year. One of the colder mountain areas is the Blue Mountain Range since it is the tallest mountain on the island. When it rains in Jamaica, it rains for short periods of time, and the rainfall is light. People in Jamaica wear very colorful, loose and comfortable clothes. Jamaican women often wear clothes that are handmade, and they also wear skirts, blouses, and headscarves. Men wear pants and shirts, but the fabric used in making men’s attire is natural, organic fabric.
Though the major holidays are Jonkanoo (around Christmastime) and Independence Day (August 6). Several weeks before Independence Day, Jamaicans have a big celebration called "Festival!" During this period of time, artists of all types perform. School children also are involved. This helps stimulate their sense of national pride and tradition. On Emancipation Day, many former British colonies on various dates celebrate their liberation. Emancipation Day is part of a week-long cultural celebration in Jamaica. During this time, Jamaicans also commemorate Jamaican Independence Day. On Jonkanoo,a dancing procession is held. Celebrants wearing costumes dance to drums and cane flutes.
