What Is Your Most Prized Possession Under $5 and Why?
My most prized possession should be a pen which belonged to my grandmother. It may seem ordinary from its appearance, but it contains much more emotions than anything I have.
I was born in a family which the business seemed to be the most important thing in the world. I still remembered that when I was young, I spent much time with my grandmother. The first face I saw in the morning was my grandmother’s, instead of my parents’ faces. In my mind, they worked and worked; they seldom spent time with me. When I was hungry, my grandmother cooked delicious food for me. When I was ill, my grandmother took good care of me. When I wanted to go outside, my grandmother would definitely be with me. The love that she gave me could not be measured by anything.
She wanted me to be successful; therefore, she always told me how to be a good person and even how to write. To be honest, I could not remember the exact time when she taught me how to write, but I would never forget the experiences of writing my first word.
My grandmother only went to the primary school for the education; she could not write a lot of Chinese words. I still remembered her face when she tried to look up some words in the dictionary and tried to teach me about it. I do not have an exact memory of the paper that I used; however, the picture of the pen I used is still in my mind now. It is a purple pen with a few of flowers on its cover. That was also a pen that witnessed the first word that I wrote. It is this pen that contains the love from my grandmother. It is this pen that makes me think of my grandmother all the time. It is this pen that inspires me to keep writing my thought and to remember what my grandmother said about how to be a good person.
Although my grandmother passed away, her love and spirits about studying will always inspire me to have a high level. This pen is and will always be the prized possession that I have ever had.

History can prove that the consciousness of fertility can cause females to flaunt just how fertile they are to the proper mating pool through ornamentation. It was researched through the observation of mating rituals in birds. Females are known to lavishly decorate their nests with flowers, leaves and the best twigs they can find just to attract a suitable mate. Although the studies and observations can prove that females tend to make themselves stand out to a partner, yet, there is still the question of why. In a study (Hasleton, Mortezie, Pillsworth, Bleske-Rechek, Fredrick 2007) has come up with a study on ornamentation and how it is affected by shifts in the ovulatory cycle. Hasleton et al. (2007) hypothesizes “that changes in women’s motivations manifest themselves in changes in self-ornamentation through attentive personal grooming and attractive choice of dress.” thus a woman is more motivated to go out and find a man once they have adorned themselves in the proper dress that makes them feel attractive.…

The journal entry that I chose to write about is based on the article “Weighing the Grandma Factor; In Some Societies, It's a Matter of Life and Death” written by Natalie Angier. I chose this journal entry in particular because it brought memories that I enjoyed to the forefront that I haven’t thought about in a while. This article also discussed the impact grandmothers have and unique role they play in our lives, from birth to the transition off of breast milk and beyond. Through reading this article I gained some new insight into myself and the impact that my own Grandmother had on me. Also, through keeping a journal and reflecting on these readings provided in my English class I have discovered and unveiled distant memories once locked away…

But although I had a close family that doesn’t mean my family life was perfect or without obstacles. The respect for my family members is un-parallel by any other object in this world. On my fathers’ side, I learned what it meant for people to leave their homeland in Mexico for a shot at opportunity without guarantee and successfully build a life in Denver. On my mothers side, I learned what it meant for a family to endure loses that no family should and still stand strong. These loses included the loss of my aunty to demotic violence at the young age of 32 and the stroke of my uncle at the age of 33 that left him without the ability to walk and care for himself.…

On November 18, 1995 in Santa Monica California, I was born into my loving mother’s arms. My parents soon separated, and I grew up with my mother, stepfather, and little brother. From a very young age I was already beginning to take an interest in the written word. I can remember attempting over and over again to write my “bs” and “ds” the correct way until my small hand grew tired. My love of reading, which began at the age of four, continued all through my childhood and into my teens. I could scarcely be seen without a book in hand. As a child of divorce, my role in the family quickly changed from child to adult. Growing older, life was not all adventures and scavenger hunts anymore. Up until middle school, I excelled…

One of the most memorable books of my childhood is called “The Rainbow Fish”. In kindergarten, we read this book almost every day. I don’t know why I liked this particular book so much. Was it the colorful pattern the book cover had? I just don’t know. I thought this book was the most amazing book I ever heard of. When I think of this book, I think about how my teacher helped me and my classmates learn how to read better with this book. My literacy experience started at home. Every one can’t say the same. Sitting in bed every night, waiting on my mother to come tuck me in and read me a bedtime stories. When she finally came, she would walk towards my bookshelf to grab a particular book every night. I never knew what it was called, but I know…

While the assignment seemed like the biggest catastrophe of my fourth grade career at the time, I would not trade the hours spent listening to my grandfather’s stories for anything in the world. Those few hours alone taught me more about hard work and determination than any class at school ever could. I try every day to remind myself of the sacrifices he made for me to be here and have the opportunity to get an education and pursue my passions.…

In the novel The Things They Carried, by Tim O'Brien, soldiers would do just about anything to stay sane and alive during the Vietnam War. Some men would have carried things with them during the war. These same men would carry things to remind them of home, others would carry an item to help them feel better during their hardships. What these men carried was something to hold onto, moreover not an item but of a memory or a dream. Soldiers would do just about anything to stay sane and alive during the Vietnam War. I also have items that I would feel wrong without; these items are symbols of me.…

In sixth grade, I stood before a podium that stared back at my English class. This was not how I envisioned sharing my love for reading and writing; however, it was required. My palms felt sticky, and I just knew that the entire class could see my heart as it was about to hop from the walls that kept it safe. I prayed that I would not forget the lines as I recited The Road Not Taken by Robert Frost. In sixth grade, reading, writing, and I started a relationship. Today, we have yet to break up.…

Every person has on object in their life that is very precious to the, for me, it is my pearl necklace. They are small and round and a lustrous cream color with a pink sheen. They have a tiny gold clasp that holds the necklace together. My pearls tell a story than no other personal artifact can: my heritage. The pearls symbolized tradition and womanhood in my family’s life, and they were to be worn with dignity and pride. Every holiday, the girls of the family accessorized their outfits with the pearls given by our grandmother. They were something we all had in common: the thread that linked our generations together. I recall looking down at my Nana’s casket and I could almost hear her voice whispering in my ear, “Never let any one prevent you from being you,” her outlook on life. Taking my last glimpse of Nana, I gently rubbed her casket goodbye and then rubbed my pearls. Instead of clinging to my mother that day, I clenched to my pearls.…
