Throughout this reflective account i will refer to the individual I was working with as Gloria. I have not used her real name throughout this piece to protect her identity and to ensure that I am maintaining confidentiality. “You must respect people’s rights to confidentiality” (NMC 2013) Gloria is a 74 year old lady who lives at the residential care home at which I am currently on placement Gloria is under the Adults with Incapacity Scotland Act 2000 due to a diagnosis of Dementia. She is mobile with the aid of a Zimmer frame and is still as independent as her health allows. She requires the assistance of 1 carer for most activities of daily living. After breakfast I offered to take Gloria to the toilet as she had requested to go to the bathroom during her meal but was told by a care assistant that she would have to wait until after her meal. The carer told me the care home operated “protected meals times” and this was the reason that Gloria could not go to the toilet during her meal. I felt competent under supervision to assist Gloria with using the toilet. One should never accept a task delegated to them unless they feel competent and confident in carrying out the task that has been asked of them. The NMC Code of Conduct states that “You must recognise and work within the limits of your competence” and “You must take part in appropriate learning and practice activities that maintain and develop your competence and performance.” (NMC 2013)…

My job role and responsibilities as a care assistant include many different role’s. I will compile these into a typical morning shift at work. At the start of the day we all have a handover report, then before we start breakfast feeds we must always wash our hands and put on the feeding apron to prevent germs getting transferred into the food and into the kitchen. We start on a feeding list crossing every one off individually to make sure everyone has been done. We make sure the client to be fed is sat up well in bed to prevent choking, after everyone has been marked off on the list we change our aprons to blue for caring and make sure we wash our hands before starting.…

Bennie Bellamy applied for the job position of Certified Nursing Aide (CNA). He was hired at Patton-Fuller Community Hospital. On January 14, 18 and February third, sixth Bennie was found to have not completed or documented vital signs on the patients he was assigned for his shift. Bennie was coached and received corrective action about why he had skipped doing vitals on these shifts. The job description for the CNA position clearly states that the CNA is to take and record vitals as directed. On Bennie’s first yearly evaluation in May 2003, he received a ‘1’ for not following directions when he skipped doing patient vitals on four separate shifts. Although deficient on one area of his review, he still earned a 2% merit increase for his first yearly evaluation. Over the next two yearly evaluations for May 2004 and May 2005 Bennie showed improvement and received 3% merit increases for both years. The corrective action Bennie received helped improve Bennie’s responsibilities in his job description and Bennie has not had any additional problems.…
Working as an aide for eight years, I know that there are many times I have come across residents/patients who are combative, verbally abusive, and others who just do not want to cooperate with their care. Aides also risk themselves every day with diseases, disorders, and other harmful body fluids they come in contact with that they can possibly take home to their families. They are responsible for bed making or changing after getting someone up from out of bed. Tidying up the room and taking the dirty linens to the baskets is added to the list of things to do for them as well. There are so many duties of an aide, in some nursing homes and hospitals the aide is responsible for taking vital signs. The nurses have the duties of documenting on the residents. Often aides are given the duty for doing treatments that are ordered by a physician because it is a part of the care. In most cases the aide becomes…
I worked as a hospital greeter for four month got laid of due to budget cuts. I'm currently a caregiver for an elderly woman who I have been with for four years now. I have learned that I like to help people out. I am the person that goes the extra mile to get things done because genuinely love to help people out and it's not something that can be faked. In my previous job as a greeter in the emergency department I help out an elderly lady get from the emergency department to the cafeteria. Her husband was being seen by the doctors she had stay over night with him. My job as a greeter was just to let her into the hospital but I noticed she was having trouble walking with her walker and I knew it was going to be hard for her since it would…

After the orientation, our group was divided into two and we were given directions on which wing we will be assigned. There were three of us in my group, and each one of us was assigned to a resident attendant. We were given instructions to just shadow and observe on how things are being done during the first three hours of the resident attendant's shift. Since I had the experience in a long-term care facility, I am familiar with some of the procedures and routines that are being done by the Personal Support Worker (PSW). That being said, I could say that I was comfortable in assisting the resident attendant/ PSW in providing nursing care to the clients. Although I was familiar and comfortable with the setting of a long-term care facility, I still felt anxious on how I can provide the best care possible for the residents.…
When reading The Assistant and The Fixer, by Bernard Malamud, a person notices some immediate similarities. Both novels are very similar because of the characters and common themes in both novels. Even though the books are not meant to be related, Malamud does a great job drawing a parallel between two difference stories with two completely different plot lines. In The Assistant and The Fixer the characters Frank and Yakov Bok, Morris and Shmuel, Frank, Helen, and Yakov Bok, and Morris and Yakov Bok are very similar. Also, throughout the two novels the themes of Jewish verses non-Jewish and lies and deceit appear quite often.…
Today in placement I was asked if I would be able to assist Mrs X with personal care and dressing. Mrs X has advanced dementia and takes a lot of prompting to do simple tasks on her own, such as washing her face. Mrs X is fully mobile and needs a lot of support to hold her concentration on particular tasks or she is more likely to be distracted and wander off. Being aware of Mrs X’s needs I agreed that I am more than confident to assist her. I knocked on Mrs X’s door before entering, and went in. I explained to Mrs X that I was there to help her with her daily routine on waking. Mrs X appeared to be happy with me being there, and was talking away to me like she had known me for years, but most of her sentences did not make…

During my fall break, I decided to volunteer and help Joyce Gamarra with the cards or anything she needed help with. Mrs. Gamarra first offered me to go with her to a meeting at Wake Baptist hospital to meet with other community leaders to help organize programs in Forsyth County. On October 5th , the day of the event Mrs. Gamarra said that there was another thing that came up that devoted her attention more. I was understanding but I wanted to gain experience in a different way. At this point, I realize that I can only do paper and data work, because that is it more stable and easier for me to do. Mrs. Gamarra and my schedule does not always connect. On October 7th, Mrs. Gamarra asked me to research Safety Net Clinic in the nearby counties.…
