Unit 4
Jose R. Pineda
Mrs. Bennet
Group Chapter 4
What is a cause and effect essay? • A cause and effect essay shows the reader the
•
relationship between something that happens (cause) and its consequences (effect), or between actions and results. There are different kinds of cause and effect essay for example: Informative, analytical and insightful.
Types of cause and effect essay
• In this unit we are going to study only 2 types of cause and effect essay.
•
In one method the writer is going to be focus on the causes, making the reader to ask questions such as: why or how; this is called the focus-oncauses essay.
•
In the second method the writer emphasizes the effects or results of the cause, making the reader ask the questions like: what if? This is called focus-on-effect essay.
• For example if professor Bennet tells us to write and cause and effect essay we only have two ways to develop this essay. Let say the topic is: Quitting a job.
•
Method 1: Focus on causes: We would start writing why people quit their jobs and any possible reason why would they do so; each paragraph containing different causes.
•
Method 2: Focus on effect: By contrast this one we would emphasize on the effects of quitting a job; each paragraph containing one effect.
• Cause/effect paragraphs generally follow basic
paragraph format. That is, they begin with a topic sentence and this sentence is followed by specific supporting details. For example, if the topic sentence introduces an effect, the supporting sentences all describe causes, and vice versa.
