To be American can mean many different things depending on each person, whether if they are an immigrant, alien, or a true citizen. The pure definition of what does it mean to be American is, “To be bored and raised in the United States”. Although it is also said and known that we have free rights, but that doesn’t mean we are a hundred percent freedom free because we are American. For example, say you are watching T.V and a commercial of having a car blow out with amazing prices, comes on; there is always the small print though that states all the real facts of the commercial. With the definition of what it is to be American, there should be a section of the, “small print” to clearly explain

For when my parents were in school, they said a prayer before class started for the day. Now it is totally absurd to do this. Times have changed, and our country and what we are known for have too. In Obama’s Victory speech in 2008, he tells us that we must accept change, that in America we are constantly changing. I defiantly do agree with “change” but if the effect of that change doesn’t result positively to our country, why do we keep making changes that are hurting us? He promised us that he would make sacrifices for us so that Americans didn’t all have to suffer as a whole. As a whole though our country has only developed more debt than both of our past presidents, Bush and Washington combined. We use to have freedom and a happy country, now all you see is minorities and people miserable. Our society is not happy with full of laughs, it’s actually full of depression caused by who and what have become part of our country, America. In the New York Times it tells many about how our country of, America in the 21st century has encountered drastic changes over periods of time. My parents always tell me how when they were growing up, they didn’t have any worries like most kids my age today do. They say that it’s a whole new world out there from what they know and their sorry for me because of what our country has come to being an American in America. For many American workers, work three jobs back to back, both man and woman to support a family, where that is even a sudden change to America. It was known for many years, and till about a minimum of ten years ago that most of the American population got married around the age of eighteen and had already had at least one to three children by the age of twenty one. Now a day’s marriage is not a high percentage of what it used to be, for many either never get married or are waiting till their thirties. I think that this shows a maturity level change also

Ralph Linton states that, “There can be no question about the average American’s Americanism or his desire to preserve this precious heritage at all costs.” So what does it really mean to be 100% American? When one claims to be 100% American, they are typically not going to say it with 100% confidence. Take for instance immigration. In 1970 alone, the number of immigrants in the United States skyrocketed from 9.6 million to roughly 26 million.…

Many people come to the United States to attain their dreams and, at some point, earn the title of an American. It is a term that is thrown around often, but do we honestly know the true meaning? Recently, the entire nation has become divided over what it means to live and be a part of America. Therefore, as a writer for the Washington Post stated, “If we can’t agree on what being “American” really means, it’s going to be very hard to find common ground on anything else” (Cillizza). The term American is an abstract idea and cannot be completely defined. There are many elements to consider because everyone is different, but that is what makes America so special. It is home to a very diverse nation. The meaning behind being an American can be…

    What America Means to Me

My poster board is broken up into five different sections. My first section of my collage is pictures of America’s most famous symbols, such as the White House, the flag, Mount Rushmore, and the Statue of Liberty. The second section of my collage is labeled ideals and values. The pictures I choose were family, wealth, products, and democracy. Family, wealth, and products are three things Americans strive for; it’s a common goal for most of us. Democracy is something that we had to fight for so it’s something that Americans value. My third section is societal issues and I choose abortion, gun control, and gay marriage. Something about all three of these topics is that they almost force you to have an opinion. These topics cause debates and force voting and no matter what the government decides on, it will always be argued. My fourth section is strengths, for this I choose freedom, diversity, military, and government. Our government is the best in the world because its fair but also structured. We also have one of the best militaries because of technology that we have because of funding. We are a very diverse nation because we welcome people from every part of the world. My fifth section is labeled weaknesses. The pictures I choose are U.S. Boarder Patrol, oil dependency, welfare, and foreclosure. There is only so much that our boarder patrol can do but there has to be change. Oil dependency in the U.S. is a huge problem because someday it will either run out or get too expensive. Although welfare helps a lot of people, many people abuse it and it’s not fair to the people who work to pay for…

    What America Means to Me

America is a wonderful place to live, because we are free. Freedom is important, and many people in other countries do not have much freedom. I am glad I have a place like this to grow up in; where I know that I can be equal with other races and other genders. Also, I am glad I have a place like this that will respect me and I know it will be a great place to have my children grow up in. Some of our ancestors did not have the privileges we have now because they grew up in other countries, that controlled their religion, who they married, and almost everything else in their lives. That may be one of the reasons they moved to America in the first place. I am very grateful for our country, and all of the privileges I have growing up here. In many countries, I wouldn't be able to get the education that is available to me, and I wouldn't get many of the rights I have because I am a woman. <br><br>Women's rights have been a major issue in the past, especially in some other countries, where women must walk around completely covered or they are arrested. In America, even though we had to fight for these rights, not only can we vote, but we can also get the same education and same jobs as the men in today's society. <br><br>Another part of America that I like is the way politics are set up. Anyone who thinks they can do a good job is able to run for a place in today's government. We don't only have one ruler who makes all our rules and laws, but instead the people in America are ruled by the people. I like that because that way if we want something changed, or if enough of us think that something is wrong with our nation, we can make a difference. Voting is a big part of making that difference, because voting shows how you want our government run, and whom you want to be represented by. We aren't just represented by our president. We are also represented by our town councils, our mayors, our governors, senators, and everyone else that makes up a part of our government. So…
