What Led To The Civil War

The Civil War divided the nation into two parts and was a war fought between the northern states and the southern states. The north was called the union and the south was called the Confederacy. There were quite a few reasons why the south broke away and why both halfs started to fight. The reasons for the Civil War were political, social and economic, things such as the Election of 1860, Uncle Tom's Cabin, cotton production and slavery were big contributions to the war. The Election of 1860 was intense. In the running there was Abraham Lincoln, Stephen Douglas, John C. Breckinridge and John Bell. Lincoln's platform was that he wanted to let slavery continue where it already was but not make any new slave states, but his biggest concern was keeping the union together. He was the opposite of Breckenridge, Breckenridge wanted more slave states and supported slavery and basically said that if you didn't vote for him the south would secede from the union. Stephen Douglass supported the idea of popular sovereignty for states on the issue of slavery. John Bell on the other hand was neutral on the topic. This book got wildly popular and was read and talked about by many. The book brought the horrid truths of slavery to the eyes of many northerners who went exposed to that sort of thing in their everyday life and that made them want to fight more for the rights and freedoms or at least laws of better treatment. The book also has illustrations. Depending on who's looking at some of them the image appears differently to some than others making the book even more wildly controversial. The book was a large factor to starting the war because it made people aware, and gave them information and taught them how awful parts of their own country
