Beowulf exhibits a tremendous strength that made him different than others. Throughout the epic poem, we encounter many of these astounding attributes of the Swedish Prince. For instance, he had the ability to swim underwater for a great amount of time. Also, he carried the sword, which was made by the giants that no ordinary man could ever lift it. This suggests that he is something more than a human. Beowulf was able to kill the fierce monster, Grendel, and its mother alone without any support from his men.
“Fate will unwind as it must”. Believing in fate was an important factor in the Anglo-Saxon society. Also, it was one of the main qualities of an epic hero. The people believed that a man could not do anything to avoid death, but would rather have to embrace it. Therefore, Beowulf believed in fate. He feels the pull of fate, and realizes that if it were his time to die, he would die. If, however, he were fated to live, that would allow him to triumph. This is one of the main reasons that he goes and confronts the monsters, Grendel and its mother, and the dragon despite his weak and fragile
