24 January 2014 Beowulf: The Great Warrior In the ancient Anglo-Saxon time period life was very difficult due to harsh weather and brutal battles with ruthless warriors. The people of this time period had a fairly grim point of view when it came to life after death. They believed that the only way a person would be remembered after death is if they achieved great feats during their lifetime such as conquering cities, or slaying ravenous beasts. Beowulf, son of Hrothgar, was a great warrior who was highly respected and accomplished all of this plus more. He traveled to the Danish kingdom to take care of their problem, a hideous and sinister monster that the Danes called Grendel. None of the Danish warriors were strong enough or brave enough to take on this creature, but once Beowulf heard of this he jumped at the opportunity to take his stab at it. He gathered his strongest and most loyal men and began his long journey by boat across the ocean. Once he got there he spoke to the Danish king and at once said he would slay the beast. You can tell how brave he is when he hears of the beast just using its own hands to kill , so it is said that he would not use weapons he would take this creature on hand to hand. The night Grendel made an attempt to kill Beowulf, it says that in their battle “Grendel’s power had gone. He twisted in pain, and the bleeding sinews deep in his shoulder snapped, muscle bone split and broke. The battle was over, Beowulf had been granted glory: Grendel escaped by wounded as he could flee to his den his miserable hole at the bottom of the marsh only to die to wait for the end of all his days.” (p.24 lines 815-823) He also killed another awful creature that descended from Cain. It was Grendel’s mother who was hungry for revenge. She had come to Herot hall in order to avenge her son’s death. After her raid, Beowulf followed her footprints to the lake where she resided. He gave a speech and was the only warrior who was brave enough to jump into the depths of the lake. He then swam to the bottom and killed Grendel’s mother with a sword made by giants. In Beowulf’s old age he was still young at heart and did not back down from a battle. Something had caused the dragon to wreck Havoc on his homeland and so he defended his land and people. Knowing that this might be his last battle, Beowulf still went and attempted to slay this dragon. This dragon was the one
