What Makes People Successful
What makes people successful?
I want to talk to you about one of the most successful people, whose name is Carlos Slim. Personally he puts his success down to his admiration for his father and to American oil billionaire Jean Paul Getty. Slim learns of Getty’s business acumen as a young boy and has gone on to mirror his ability to make money. While studying civil engineering he realized the way to make money was from investing in companies, and so set up on his own as a stockbroker on graduation, working 14-hours days.
As for the characteristics, which help him to become a successful business man, I’ d like to point out that he definitely has a dedication to his job, because, in my opinion, if he hadn’t got it, he wouldn’t work for 14 hours a day, as he actually did. Then, I think that the nepotism played an important role in his way to the top. Because, as far as I am concerned, his father made his fortune investing in property during the Mexican revolution. So, it’s obvious that his father had a lot of connections in this sphere of business. From the biography it’s known that at the age of 11, Slim invested In government saving bonds. It’s also clear that his father gave him this money. To all the above, it would be unfair not to mention that he possessed great luck. All the successful businessmen have it.
Talking about the best business indicators of an individual’s level of success, I’d like to mention exotic holidays. A tour to an exotic country costs a lot and not every human being can afford it. Then it is, of course, the designer clothes. The majority of people, who has good income, is striving for buying only designer clothes. And when you see a man dressed from top to toe in brands, you can understand, that he has enough money for it. Expensive jewellery is also a good way to show your income. However, Carlos Slim in spite of his obvious wealth, remains frugal in his tastes, and is often seen wearing a plastic-effect wrist-watch which doubles as a

Malcolm Gladwell argues that people do not become successful from nothing. He simply suggests that there are “hidden advantages and extraordinary opportunities and cultural legacies that allow them to work hard and make sense of the world in ways others cannot” (19). In order to prove his claim he discusses a wide variety of seemingly different anecdotes that eventually connect to each other at one point or another. He simply tells a story as if he was narrating a bedtime story for his kids, which then turns into a life lesson rant where he is teaching them something they will use later on. He analyzes the original story to explain all the little reasons that specific person did or did not become successful which coincides with the side story. Once the…
