The family had a few health issues with some of the members and because Sergei was so caring he used wishes to bring them back to perfect health. Later Sergei wanted to secluded himself from people and when Yoni came that's when he didn’t have the best attitude. The fact that Sergei used to be so caring allowed him to save the boy with his last wish. Since Sergei had good relationships with others that helped define him to become caring.
