One day or another, STEM is going to save the world. As society evolves, STEM continues to be a leader in growth and innovation. I believe that Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics will help to solve the world’s most urgent issues such as Global Warming and Overpopulation. All of these problems are caused by the environment and organisms, so the solutions should come from them. The STEM field that interests me most and works towards solving such problems is biotechnology which “harnesses cellular and biomolecular processes to develop technologies and products that help improve our lives and the health of our planet” (Bio).
The experiences that have shaped my interests range from online experiments to hands-on activities. The first time I heard about biotechnology was in my 8th grade Earth and Environmental Science class. My teacher told the class about how biotechnology was used to create bacteria that ate oil and that reduced the Exxon Valdez oil spill in Alaska. Before that class, I never knew that one could manipulate organisms to act in certain ways. That …show more content…
Such science camps definitely opened my eyes to the limitless amount of possibilities in STEM. One experience that really stuck with me was an experiment conducted in the microbiology camp. Everyone in the class went out to the school’s backfield and picked a component of life to sample bacteria from. Some chose leafs and dirt, while others chose unsuspecting grasshoppers and ladybugs. I, on the other hand, chose to collect bacteria from a small lavender flower. Throughout the remaining days of camp, we grew our sample bacteria on various petris dishes simulating different environments. I was amazed that certain bacteria grew in even the harshest
