The diplomatic relation between Indonesia and Japan has been excellent since the Peace Agreement between the Republic of Indonesia and Japan, which was signed in January 1958. Indonesia considers Japan as one of its crucial partners in achieving its national development goals and with regard to its participation in maintaining the world order through a number of cooperation at the bilateral, regional and multilateral level. One of bilateral cooperation being carried out is the sister city program. Currently there are six sister city arrangements MoUs between the two governments, they are Jakarta-Tokyo, Yogyakarta-Kyoto, Surabaya-Kochi, Medan-Ichikawa, East Java-Osaka Prefecture and Irian Jaya-Yamagata Prefecture.1
Sister city program is intended to build cooperation and deepen mutual understanding between cities of different nations through socio-cultural approach. As its approach, I too agree that with a better mutual understanding, it will lead to a solid relationship in the future in every strategic aspects. The current form of partnership between Indonesia and Japan has been covering many aspects. Therefore, if mutual understanding is well maintained, it will the fundamental aspect to build a solid relationship between Indonesia and Japan.
As an engineering student, I have to consider how we are able to improve a better quality of social life through a utilization of technology. It is impossible for us to have optimum technology utilization on the right target if we lack of socio-cultural understanding, since introducing technology to the society is not always as smooth as predicted. Therefore, having more point of views through learning and conducting research is one kind of contribution a student can make.
