Abstract
Managing children’s behaviour is a skill that all practitioners need to learn, this assignment will explore the different strategies used by professionals in order to promote positive behaviour.
Research of a local 0-4 year old setting, reveals the importance that praise and encouragement have on reinforcing positive behaviour. Whilst the use of sanctions are decreasing, positive behavioural strategies are on the increase in the hope to promote better behaved children.
Introduction
The question posed for the research is “What strategies do Early Years Professionals use to promote positive behaviour?”
The aim of the research is to review the literature surrounding the topic, identify a methodology to conduct new research within a particular setting and present the findings of what strategies the setting uses to promote such behaviour. Kay (2006) defines the term behaviour management as policies, strategies and responses used to eradicate misbehaviour and promote positive behaviour.
There are different strategies that early year’s settings can implement to promote positive behaviour and this research is going to identify some of the techniques that are being used within the specific setting. Every child and parent is unique, so each individual will respond differently to different strategies.
