What Sunscreen Works
What Sunscreen really works?
Problem: Will sunscreen with an SPF of 4 be able to withstand the sunlight more effectively than SPF 45?
Purpose: Due to the increasing amount of sun exposure on teens, we want to ensure that sunscreen can protect against the sun. An increase amount of exposure can damage the skin directly. The dangers of increased sun can lead to the 3 types of skin cancer (Basal, Melanoma, and Squamous) and these types can spread to other parts of the body. The most dangerous form of skin cancer is Melanoma cancer and is developed from melanocytes. Melanoma is more likely to spread and it usually occurs on the chest and back. Basal and Squamous are the most common and develop from keratinocytes. There are several ways that this can be prevented and sunscreen is one of the most common forms of prevention.
Sun Protection Factors also known as SPF is used to measure the amount of protection against Ultraviolet B. SPF are the ratio it takes to determine the time the skin begins to redden and sunburn starts. This means that if sunburn starts at 15 minutes of exposure to the sun if you put on sunscreen with an SPF of 45 it is meant to protect you 45 times longer.
Research and Development: Shockingly, until recently, evidence that sunscreen prevented the deadly skin cancer melanoma was almost as thin as Gisele Budchen, a thin British model. That changed last year with the publication of a randomized controlled trial from Australia, in which study participants assigned to slap on sunscreen had less melanoma over 10 years. “Now, the evidence is there, and it’s very strong,” Dr. Wang says.
Still, it’s unclear what’s actually happening on the beach. In a study published last year in Cancer Causes & Control, people who said they used sunscreen actually reported more sunburns—bright-red risk factors for cancer. “Often people wearing sunscreen end up spending longer in the sun. If they don’t apply often enough, thickly enough, and to all of the exposed areas, they don’t get the protection they think they’re getting,” says study author Eleni Linos, M.D., a dermatologist at the University of California-San Francisco. For all the uproar, dermatologists and public health advocates agree sunscreen is an important weapon in your cancer-prevention arsenal.
Hypothesis: If sunscreen has an SPF of 45 it should be able to withhold ultraviolet rays from the sun more effectively than a sunscreen with SPF of 4.

Equipment: * Sunscreen with SPF of 4 and 50 * Agar Plates * Inoculating loop * Yeast Extract-Dextrose * Mutant Yeast Strain * Proper PPE * Balance * Weight boat * Incubator * Sun exposure
Procedure:
1. Gather all equipment and put on proper PPE. 2. Streak 3 agar plates with mutant yeast 3. Streak 3 plates with wild yeast 4. Cover all 6 plates with saran wrap 5. Measure .5 grams of SPF 5 sunscreen on two weigh boats 6. Measure .5 grams of SPF 50 sunscreen on two weigh boats 7. Use finger to rub SPF 5 sunscreen on plate with mutant yeast 8. Repeat step 7 on plate with wild yeast 9. Use finger to run SPF 50 sunscreen on plate with mutant yeast 10. Repeat step 9 on plate with wild yeast 11. Cover half of each plate with aluminum foil (including control plates) 12. Expose plates to sunlight for 30 minutes. 13. Take plates out of sunlight and uncover the plastic wrap and foil. 14. Place lids on top of the agar plates. 15. Place the agar plates in an incubator overnight.
Day Two: 1. Take the plates out of the incubator and analyze them. 2. Make sure that your controls are correct. 3. If your controls are not correct then the test is non valid and you must start over. 4. If your controls are correct look at the difference between the products that you tested and your conclusions. Agar plates: | Growth(foil) | Growth | Control Mutant | X | No | Control Wild | X | X | Wild Spf 4 | X | X | Wild Spf 50 | X | X | Mutant Spf 4 | X | No | Mutant Spf 50 | X | No |
This plate is the mutant control. The side that has no growth was the side that was exposed to sunlight for 30 minutes. It did not have any sunscreen protection.

This plate is the Mutant plate that had the spf 4 sunscreen on it. This plate was not streaked correctly so it is hard to tell if the sunscreen actually worked or not.

This plate is the Mutant that had the spf 45 sunscreen on it. This plate shows that the side that was exposed to the sunlight has less growth than the side that was covered with foil.

This plate is the Wild control plate. This plate shows less growth on the side with the foil but the growth is still there. So the sunlight slowed down the growth process but not enough to make it stop growing.

Although UV radiation is a good reason to stay indoors to avoid the sun there are ways to enjoy the sun and still be protected. For example staying inside of a patio , under a beach umbrella or car could help protect skin from UV radiation however you should seek further resources because some UV rays like UVB can pass through those leaving your skin exposed. To further protect the skin people typically use sun protection lotions with different levels which provide more or less protection. SPF 50 provides about two percent more protection than SPF 30 and 5 more percent than SPF 15. The highest level of SPF is 100 which protects 99 percent of the skin but no factor can protect it 100 percent(The American Cancer Society medical and editorial…

As I began to explore more in depth about this topic, nothing really seemed to sway me away from the tanning beds until I came upon these statistics from the Skin Cancer Foundation stating that “Each year there are more new cases of skin cancer than the combined incidence of cancers of the breast, prostate, lung and colon.” When UVR was proven a human carcinogen it was a huge step; this had always been an idea but when it was a fact it opened the eyes to many tanning bed users.…

Within the last few years, scientists and doctors have found the true danger to UV rays. While having a tanned body maybe attractive for some, the problem is that there are also many tanning bed dangers. Some of the dangers associated with tanning are public knowledge while others are not. While tanning beds can help improve an individual's self imagine they are also very dangerous. If an individual is not aware of their skin type and the intensity of the UV rays, they can become seriously burnt, which increases the risk of developing skin cancer. Long term exposure can lead to other skin damages such as wrinkles, age spots, change in texture and thickness. This is caused by your skin drying out and weakening the connective tissues. Another reason to use caution, it has been found that a person laying in a tanning bed is likely to expose their eyes to radiation levels that are one hundred times the normal level received from the sun. Despite the warnings, professional indoor tanning facilities require there consumers to read and sign consent forms that include warnings and information on the potential eye damage and skin cancer. Warning labels have been placed on every tanning device and almost every general area in a facility. Professional tanning facilities require parental consent for teenagers who tan. Even though consumersknow all the warnings they will continue to…

It would be a pretty good idea to try to get a nice base tan prior to going to the beach, river or pool. Despite what was considered normal for tanning (go outside get burnt, peel and then turn Tan) it is not good for you, it is not comfortable and it is actually a pain. So my best suggestion would be to come to the salon and enjoy tanning at least every other day or so while you are developing a nice base tan. Every other day will work for some while…

In recent years, there has been a lot of controversy about tanning, and tanning beds. From the moment we are born we are being warned about the harms of UV rays. When going to the beach, or to play outside parents are always lathering their children up with sunblock, and constantly reapplying. When the children grow old enough to go to the beach by themselves parents are still warning them to remember to put sunblock on and yet as one walks down the beach you see an increasing amount of people tanning. This tanning behavior is well known, you either lay flat on your back or flat on your stomach. Some people will read, listen to music, and even sleep. Most often when people engage in these types of behavior they are doing so to…

Almost 25 percent of adolescents in America have reported going to an indoor tanning salon. Prevention and awareness are the two best ways to stop the increasing rise of skin cancer. It is necessary to be safe when exposing yourself to the sun. Proper eye protection should always be worn, such as sunglasses that cover 100 percent of UVA and UVB rays. But most importantly, a sunscreen with at least SPF 30 should always be worn when there is any chance to exposure from the sun. Along with regularly performed examinations of moles and spots on the skin, skin cancer can be nearly 100 percent treatable at an early…

Hochman tells the story of a pediatrician named Jessica Lilley, who had developed malignant melanoma after years of using tanning beds. She did not realize the impact of using tanning beds until later on in her life when she was diagnosed with skin cancer. It is noted that "five to 10 minutes (depending on the equipment) in a tanning bed is roughly equivalent to a half-hour in the sun on a mid-July afternoon"(Hochman). This is a great comparison because it shows how much stronger tanning beds can be. Tanning beds are a huge risk, especially to those who are of a young age. According to the American Academy of Dermatology, "Nearly 70 percent of tanning salon patrons are Caucasian girls and women primarily between the ages of 16 and 29, and of the 28 million people who tan indoors every year, 2.3 million are teenagers." Similar to Jessica Lilley's experience, I also have a history of skin cancer. It is extremely important for me to prevent sunburn at all costs. Personally, getting sunburn on my back mutated the cells in a few of my moles, resulting in me needing to get them removed. I regularly visit the dermatologist to keep track of my moles. If a mole changes in shape, color, or size, it is highly recommended that the mole is biopsied and tested for cancer. It is very easy to develop skin cancer if the skin is not protected under harsh UV rays; thus, it is super important for people to regularly check their skin and protect it from the sun. Overall, many underage teenagers are unaware of the harsh effects of tanning beds, which is why it is so important that teens are educated early on in their…

On November 15th, 2005 it was marked five years for Craig, a melanoma survivor. Craig states, “I was an outdoor person who thought it wouldn’t happen to me, but it did at a very young age.” Craig was diagnosed with melanoma in his left ear lobe at a self-conscious age of 21 years old. He had a two cm wedge resection and had some lymph nodes removed for testing to make sure it hadn’t spread. About a year later, a lump appeared on his left side of his neck. It was found to be secondary melanoma and spread to his lymph glands in his neck. He lost a quarter of muscles in his neck and most of his lymph nodes but not his determination. It has been the five year mark but there is a five percent chance the same melanoma can reoccur. Craig was a lucky cancer survivor from the deadliest skin cancer. Melanoma is just one of the side effects of the sun and indoor tanning is the new addiction for our generation instead of going out and getting the natural vitamin D.…
