Before apartheid became officially known as apartheid, a few laws were passed. Pass laws were introduced which required black people to carry passes with them at all times, black people had to be indoors by a certain time and if found without a pass, they would be jailed and sometimes beaten.
Along with these, laws of segregation were passed such as the Separate Amenities Act (segregated public facilities), Bantu Education Act (lower lever of education for black studenys), Population Registration Act (classifying of South Africans into groups) and the Prohibition of mixed marriages act (illegal for races to mix, especially in intimate relations). These laws increased political unrest and violence within South Africa before the international world became known as apartheid.
