What Was Douglas Macarthur Accomplishments

General of the Army Douglas MacArthur was best known for his leadership and the impact he had on the Pacific front during World War II. He also excelled during the first Great War and the Korean War. He was a decorated veteran that was awarded the Medal of Honor for his actions in the Philippines. At home, the American people revered him as a hero. President Harry Truman saw a different man in MacArthur. He saw a subordinate, rogue leader intent on doing whatever he wanted in the Pacific. This paper will highlight Douglas MacArthur’s accomplishments and the insubordination that ultimately led to him being relieved of command by President Truman. He spent a brief period as the Chief Engineer for the Division of the Pacific where he oversaw construction projects around the Philippine islands. When he was finished with that post, he attended Engineer School where he helped with several domestic engineer projects. In 1914, MacArthur saw combat action in Veracruz. This is where he got his first recommendation for the Medal of Honor. Coincidentally, this is also the first time MacArthur would be accused of doing his own thing. His Medal of Honor recommendation was denied because his commanding general had no knowledge of this
Army. He used this position to modernize the U.S. Army war plans. He also worked with Admiral Pratt to designate each service’s responsibilities associated with aviation. MacArthur also fought personnel cuts after the Great Depression but ultimately lost and had to close over 50 military installations. During his time as the Chief of Staff, MacArthur also oversaw the Civilian Conservation Corps. After completing his time as the Chief of Staff, he returned to the Philippines to help oversee the formation of the Philippine Army. In 1937, MacArthur retired from the military and stayed in the Philippines to advise their
